Coulteses greet at service
Greeters at Melville Presbyterian
Church Sunday morning, members
were Jack and Liz Coultes. Organist
was Crystal McLellan.
Rev. Cathrine Campbell led the
responsive reading of Psalm 63: 1-8.
The children gathered at the front
of the church to hear Rev. Campbell's
story. She passed around a wallet and
had various volunteers describe the
contents of cards, coins, money and
identification. Then Rev. Campbell
told them that this was her wallet
which she had lost at a restaurant in
Montreal during her recent trip there.
She described the really awful
feelings of isolation and helplessness
that swept over her as she first
realized that her wallet was missing.
Fortunately she was able to make her
way back to Brussels where a few
days later she received a telephone
call from a stranger who told her he
had found her wallet and was willing
to send it back to her.
"It just goes to show you that there
are good people in the world," said
Rev. Campbell, "and we all make
choices, some easy and some hard. A
stranger made the best choice and
went out of his way to return this
wallet, thus showing that he was a
man who would look out for others,
just as Jesus told us to do".
Scripture lesson was Isaiah 55: 1 -
13; I Corinthians 10: 1 - 13; and Luke
13: 1 - 9, read with the assistance of
Tammy King.
The sermon, Do Something, was
about the suffering described in the
scripture lesson where Pilate
punished some people for the crime
of blasphemy; but also the suffering
and distress caused when a tower
collapsed on a number of unfortunate
people. "There are natural evils and
man-made evils," Rev. Campbell
said.
She focused her discussion on the
train bombings which occurred last
week in Madrid Spain. When such
things happen, the silent reaction is
one of thankfulness that it happened
elsewhere, and not here, Rev.
Campbell said. But the question that
the people in Spain are asking is
"Why? Why me?"
Some would believe that there is a
direct co-relation between suffering
and the sins of those afflicted. But
Rev. Campbell says that it is not so.
And the proof of this is the fact that
Jesus himself suffered at the hands of
evildoers, and he was innocent. And
Jesus showed by his care and attitude
toward the weak and the suffering
that he did not blame them for their
condition.
"DO-not -assume that suffering is a
punishment," Rev. Campbell said,
"We are to hear, to repent and to live
truly and fully in his love with faith,
hope and thanksgiving. And in
repenting that is to turn away from
wrong things and turn toward the
truth and life".

Melville Moments by Gerald Gibson
(continued from last week)
Dr. Ferguson: They then conferred
with Mr. Low about the matter and he
acknowledged that he had shown a
temper and used language with
reference to the said matter which
was very wrong and that he was very
sorry for these things. He now had no
hard feelings against Mr. Cameron
but he could not satisfy himself
because he knew that Mr. Cameron
had deceived him and still believed
that the horse was falsely represented
to him.
He then saw Mr. Cameron and
reasoned with him and advised him
to drop the whole matter, but Mr.
Cameron was not willing to do so.
The two elders were instructed by the
session to ask Messers. Cameron and
Low to appear before the session in
the manse.
At the session meeting both parties
agreed to accept the advice of the
session, drop the whole matter and be
reconciled to one another. The case
was dismissed.
