Meeting three for the Wawanosh
Smooth Stitchers 4-H Club, Sew
Easy, was on Feb. 20 at the home of
June Robinson. It opened with the 4-
H Pledge, followed by roll call.
The following sewing items were
passed around: a bobbin, a seam
ripper and an item used to turn a
narrow strip (tie) right side out. Mrs.
Robinson led the discussion on
tracing, straightening material, the
straight of grain, and laying out a
pattern.
Catherine Robinson, youth leader,
helped members straighten a
material sample, which they are to
include in their books. To practise
tracing and sewing patterns. Mrs.
Robinson handed out patterns.
Members are to trace one of them
and sew another one on the sewing
machine without thread in the
machine. These are also to be
included in the books as illustration.
To end the meeting members had
pizza and birthday cake, made by
Mary Ellen Foran. Our members
have birthdays in February, Ellen
Jefferson (Feb.26) and Sally
Beyersbergen (Feb.29).
Meeting four was at the home of
Mrs. Robinson. She showed a
pressing pillow and press roll, then
showed different types of seams:
French seam, pinked seam, zig-
zagged seam and the bound seam.
Members looked at different seams
in the clothes they were wearing.
Members are to include examples
of a plain seam on three different
weights of material in their book.
They also discussed and
demonstrated grading seam and
clipping seams. Mary Ellen Foran
said she would look into an
achievement activity visit.

Hullett Marsh offers
March break programs
The Friends of Hullett are
offering two programs to help get
children ages six to 12 outdoors
during the upcoming March
break. The programs will take
place at the Hullett Marsh, home
to dozens of different species of
native birds and a significant
feeding and rest stop on the
migration routes of North
American waterfowl.
Our Feathered Friends will give
young people a firsthand
opportunity to discover wild
birds, both those that make the
marsh a year-round home and
others just passing through on
their way to summer breeding
grounds. It is possible that the
annual tundra swan migration
will be in full swing giving
children a chance to see hundreds
of these majestic birds as they
rest and feed at Hullett.
The Nature Art and Hike
encourages young people to
express their creativity while
exploring their natural
surroundings. "Young people
have a natural curiosity about the
outdoors," said Sandra Johnstone
the education co-ordinator at the
Hullett Marsh. "This program is
designed to allow them to express
that interest and curiosity through
pictures."
The programs are being offered
on Wednesday, March 17 and
Friday, March 19. They will run
from 10 a.m. to 12 noon and 1
p.m. to 3 p.m. each day.
The order will be reversed each
day to allow those who can only
come in the morning or afternoon
to enjoy both opportunities. If a
child is attending both sessions on
one day they should bring a lunch
and whatever snacks they need.
The Friends of Hullett ask that
you register prior to bringing your
children to the programs. Anyone
wanting to register or receive
further information please contact
Sandra at 519-482-7011.
There is no charge for these
activities although donations are
always welcome.
