At the Branch

Monday evening, Feb. 23 saw a
gathering of service groups at the
Brussels Legion. Organized by the
Optimists, the Lions, the Brussels
and Grey Fire Departments and
Brussels Legion members were
invited for a social evening. A fish
fry dinner was served by the Legion
at 7 p.m. after Donald Dunbar
started the evening by playing 0
Canada.
Spokespeople for the various
groups told of their upcoming events
and projects. They were Chief
Murray McArter for the Brussels
Fire Department, Chief Calvin
Semple to Grey Fire Department,
President Rick McDonald for the
Legion, President Paul Mutter for
the Lions and President Doug
McArter for the Optimists.
The guest speaker for the evening
was Jay Campbell of the New PL in
London.
On Thursday evening the Cadets
celebrated Sports Night. Their
physical training night included
running, tug-of-war, sticks and club
soccer. There were 12 cadets taking
part.
The general meeting of Branch
218 was held on Tuesday evening
also. There were nine comrades
present.
Business discussed included
insurance renewal which increased
from last year. Meeting with Doug
Sholdice earlier, Comrades Rick
McDonald and Julie Harrison
discussed the policy and brought Mr.
Sholdice's recommendations to the
floor.

meeting, Huron-Bruce Liberals
unanimously selected current
Member of Parliament Paul Steckle
to be the Liberal torchbearer in the
next federal general election.
Following a beef dinner and an
agriculturally-centred address from
the Honourable Lyle Vanclief, local
Liberals congratulated Steckle for
his consistent dedication to his
constituents over the past 10
years.
Association President, Nick
Whyte stated, "For the past 10 years
Steckle has without fail provided the
people of Huron-Bruce with solid
representation in Ottawa. His voice
has been ours and simply put, I can

continued need for fundraising as the
cost of insurance, and fuel are extra
heavy burdens at this time of year.
The Thursday night dart league
had I I players. The first-place finish
was John Harrison and second place
was Sandra Josling and Bob
Cochrane. The high shot for men
was by Bill Kammerman Jr. and for
the ladies Lisa Glanville.
There was a good turnout for the
public speaking contest with
students from Brussels and Grey
Central Public School.
The primary or storytelling
division had seven speakers. The
winner was Victoria Kellington with
her story Moira's Birthday. Chelsea
Terpstra earned second place with
her story, Parts. The other speakers
were Jordyn Sholdice, What Moms
Can't Do; Brody TenPas, Henry and
Madge; Heidi Bachert, Horses and
Apples; Megan Dolmage, Pigsty;
Jonathan Blake, Pizza Cookie.
Primary speakers are Grades 1-3.
The junior division of Grades 4-6
also had seven speakers. The first-
place winner was Derick Bachert
with his story about Egon the Egg.
Mercedes TenPas earned second-
place with her story about Nothing.
Presenting the other stories were
Casey King on the underground
railroad, Andrew Watson on ferrets,
Morgan Deitner on hockey moms,
Michelle Winger on the history of
flight and Mackenzie Daugherty on
Robin Williams.
The senior division of Grade 7 and
8 had six speakers. The first-place
speaker was Thomas Johnston with
his story on grandparents. The
second-place speaker was Lindsay

done and co-operatively with the
new Paul Martin team and the people
of Huron-Bruce, I commit

Watson with her speech on bad
habits. Great speeches were also
given by Angela Winger on the
tropical rain forest, John Bentley on'
potato chips, Tanya Bechard on
Third World countries and Brianne
Wheeler on playing team sports.
The judges had a difficult time in
determining the winners because all
the speakers did a wonderful job.
Judges included Les Cook, Marjory
Humphries and Carol Campbell.
The winner of each division will
advance to the zone competition
held this Saturday in Exeter.
The Friday night supper of ham
and scalloped potatoes was enjoyed
by many. This week is barbecue
chicken and rice.
On Saturday afternoon there were
22 tables of euchre. The top players
of the day were Gord and Louise
Bosman with 87 points. There was a
tie for second place with the two
teams earning 76 points apiece. They
were Linda Stevens, Kay McCrecry,
Bill Siemon and Roy Beuerman.
Not-so-lucky were Lillian Evans and
Kay Hesselwood who took the low
prize. The lone hand winners were
Stuart Chamney and Thelma.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery

suffered a fall and broke her
arm/wrist.
Our condolences to Comrade Alf
Sutton and family on the passing of
his wife Ethel.
The Sunday night singles dance
crowd of over 80 enjoyed the music
of the Ken Scott orchestra.
The cooking bee is this Saturday.
