N. Huron council hears from artistic director
By Bonnie Gropp
Citizen editor
North Huron council at its
Monday night meeting gave its
support to the nomination of Huron
County for a monetary award from
Heritage and Culture Canada and
promised to continue its tradition of
support for heritage and culture.
Blyth Festival's artisitic director
Eric Coates appeared before council
to explain the program. "The idea
behind it is to identify interesting
places that rely on culture."
On a per capita basis, Coates
noted, Huron County "does well" in
this category.
Producing art is a risky business,
said Coates. In theatre they have to
"get behind an unproven
product."
Coates talked of the current
interest in examinations of faith.
remarking on the controversy
surrounding Mel Gibson's recently-
released movie The Passion.
"We've looked at the origins of the
Passion Play and see parallels
between this and the community-
based work that has always been
most successful at our theatre. We
want to do a major project
explaining the idea of faith."
This will require a major shift in
budget, said Coates, close to double
that of a typical production. Some of
the cost would be offset by the
heritage award.
The play, set for 2005. would see
community-based art that would
draw on the talents and interests of a
diverse group of volunteers across
the county, said Coates.
A preliminary budget has been
done and the earliest figue on the
box office at this point would put it
at $1.4 million in community
revenue should all go as planned,
Coates added.
The success of this type of
North Huron council expressed
puzzlement at its Monday night
meeting for a recommendation from
Huron East.
The recommendation asked for
support from other municipalities to
send a message to county council
that a 35 per cent increase in budget
would be unacceptable.
Councillor Archie MacGowan said
he felt it was a little early for such a
recommendation. "When we first
start budget talks it always looks
pretty bleak. You have to whittle it
down. I admit those are scary
numbers, but I would rather wait to
see how the deliberations go before
production at Blyth has been proven
with The Outdoor Donnellys, said
Coates. "But not without a huge
amount of goodwill:"
Council passed a motion of
support.
we take any action."
The recommendation was filed.
***
A request from Central Huron (or
25 per cent funding for capital
projects at the Auburn Hall will be
considered during budget talks.
***
Central Huron has asked that the
Blyth Hullett landfill site be kept
open until the end of September so
that Central Huron can conduct its
own studies.
The site was set to close by
September.
North Huron agreed to the
extension.
