Message from Huron East
New on-line calendars sharing info
By Heather Boa
Wondering what the dates are for
the Seaforth Home, Garden and
Leisure Show? Don't want to miss
Easter Sunday service in Brussels?
Want everyone to know when your
Vanastra business is having its open
house?
New on-line calendars planned for
Brussels, Seaforth, Vanastra and
other centres will make it easy to
share information among neighbours
in Huron East'and beyond.
Clubs, church groups, schools,
businesses and others in these
communities are welcome to post
their events to an electronic
community bulletin board that's
simple to use and easy for visitors to
navigate.
"We have a vibrant community
with lots happening on any given
day and weekend. Once people start
sharing information, the calendar is
going to book up," said Ralph
Laviolette, business growth and
economic development officer,
Stewardship can be defined as
taking responsibility for actions
today that directly influence the
protection of values for future
generations.
It involves protecting the quality
of air, soils and water and realizing
that everyday activities have an
impact on both natural environment
and human health for current -and
future generations. Small actions
and positive steps taken by many
-landowners can make a significant
difference to the health of
community.
Developing a stewardship plan for
their property can be of great
assistance in helping landowners to
be effective land stewards and guide
their actions over the long term.
Logical steps in developing- a
stewardship plan include learning
about the resources present-on your
property, developing management
objectives and deciding on
appropriate actions over a suitable
time frame.
In the interest of helping to guide
local rural landowners through the
stewardship planning process the
Lower Maitland Stewardship Group
is hosting a speaker series entitled
Developing a Stewardship Plan For
Huron East.
"The problem with the calendar is
that we cannot improve it until
groups begin to use it. We would like
to be embarrassed by the success of
this."
Those who want to share
information just click on the
submission form of the Coming
Events section at
www.huroneast.com . From there,
they are guided through a number of
fields to ensure all the necessary
information is made available. They
may also include a website address
for. additional information. Then, a
representative from the municipality
reviews the information, edits it for
consistency and privacy, and posts it
to the calendar.
Visitors are invited to review the
current month and browse a list of
upcoming events. An additional
click of the mouse on a particular
event will call up more detailed
information.
Already, a Brussels calendar is up
Your Property on March 6 and
March 27 from 10 a.m. to noon in
the theatre at the Huron County
Museum, 110 North St., in
Goderich. Local professionals will
make presentations on wetlands,
forest management, wildlife and
restoration of open areas.
Refreshments will be provided
and admission is free (donations
accepted).
Registration for the events is not
required, however if you plan to
attend, notification by phone would
be appreciated. A hands-on field
session will also be hosted on April
17.
The Lower Maitland Stewardship
Group was formed in 1998 and is
made up of local landowners and
citizens interested in preserving the
environmental quality and scenic
beauty of the Lower Maitland River
Valley. Their mission is, "To
maintain and enhance the natural
ecosystem of the Lower Maitland
River Valley."
For more information on the
speaker series, land stewardship or

Group and its activities, please

and running on the village's
h o m e p age,
www.villageofbrussels.ca, which
can also be accessed through
www.huroneast.com. Plans are
underway to expand calendars to
serve Seaforth, then Vanastra and
other communities-,- and to provide
calendars for program and facility
use at the recreation centres at
Seaforth, Brussels and Vanastra.
The events calendars, are part of
Huron East's web development plan
to provide relevant information to its
residents and to visitors. The
expanding sites are also expected to
include a virtual museum, welcome
wagon and comprehensive business
information.
