To show everyone what talent the robot actually has (and the talent of the students who created it) Iron Stallion (the robot) made a public appearance at an open presentation at F.E. Madill Secondary School on Monday. Iron Stallion along with robots from Kincardine District High School and Walkerton High School, moved around a designated area in the school gym, pushing objects _around and driving onto a small platform. Iron Stallion is controlled by his driver, Madill student Dyne Stuckey who uses remote controls. To win the competition in Mississauga, Iron Stallion must first hit a switch by itself, then Stuckey takes over with the remotes. The robot has 15 seconds to turn the switch and if it can't, then there is a time penalty. Once the switch is turned on, the robot and controller have one_minute and 30 seconds to complete the rest of the course. 'The competition runs from April ,_1-3 with more than 78 schools competing against each other. Mark Hoba, the teacher-in-charge of the operation, said the past six weeks have been fun, but stressful. "It's been enjoyable. but a lot of work. The students really enjoyed it. but we're ready for a break," said Holm. He said their main sponsor is Wescast Industries, but donations have been received from many local merchants including Maitland Burnside Engineering, local Lions and Kinettes clubs. Jeff Simpson, project co-ordinator with Wescast, has been helping with the creation of Iron Stallion. He said Wescast wanted to help the students from an engineering aspect. "Wescast strives to be involved with technical advances and we wanted to participate locally," said Simpson. He said he started with the project around January and has been at the school several times offering feedback to the students, answering the questions and helping with the design_ "I've enjoyed it a lot. It's a very challenging competition they have entered themselves into. It will be interesting to see them compete in April," he said. Hoba said the cost to enter the competition is $5,000 American and the cost that was put into Iron Stallion was less than $1,000. He said a lot of the parts were bought or donated, but the scissor lift was fabricated by Mr. Shucks 'Grade 12 college technical class. Council agreed to rezone the property from community facility to residential low density-special for the building's purchaser. County planner Dwayne Evans noted the rezoning fails in line with the municipality's Official Plan. *** After some debate, council appointed deputy-reeve John Bezaire to the Permanent Medical Clinic Committee established by the Town of Goderich. Councillor Marg. Anderson said the danger of appointing a Central Huron member to the committee is there could be financial strings attached. Reeve Bert Dykstra echoed Anderson's sentiment. - • Meanwhile, councillor Laurie Cox wondered if it is a good idea for municipality to become involved in the arduous process of actively recruiting physicians and healthcare services. Yet, Cox also noted the Goderich facility would- benefit the area since some residents need its services. "There is no one .saying that because we have a representative there we have to write a cheque," id liciairc. adding it would bode well tor council to he Involved in the process from the beginning. *** Council agreed to accept several tenders, including a grass cutting tender from Carl Gower Welding, a gravel tender by Lavis Contracting and a calcium tender by DaLee. Councillors also approved a three per cent .wage hike for crossing guards as well as agreed to a $10,060 budget for a Clinton community park plan.
