A voice worth hearing
in Uganda. Jesus would likely have
said, "My cattle hear my voice. I
know them and they follow me."
(see John 10:27) Who are the cattle
of Jesus?
If you love someone, you are
naturally drawn to the sound, of that
person's voice. When Sarah phones
me at the office, it is refreshing to
hear the familiar tones of her voice.
If I were unable to hear her speak, it
would be a terrible impoverishment.
The same is true in a relationship
with Jesus. It's absurd to think that
someone who knows his love would
want to ignore his voice. That is
simply riot what friends do.
Jesus continues to speak today.
There are various ways we can
prepare ourselves to hear him: by
reading the Bible and chewing on its
words, by talking to Jesus in prayer.
by singing or listening to music that
gives glory to God, by going for
silent walks, by turning off the TV or
radio for awhile, by spending time
with other Christians in worship, by
getting honest with God about our
sins.
These (and other practices) are
called spiritual disciplines and they
help us to tune into the voice of God.
We simply begin by asking Jesus
to speak to us. And then we listen.

In Uganda. cattle-rustling is a
major problem. Every day. the
Ugandan army tries to reunite cattle
with their true owners. Apparently
one of their biggest hurdles is to sort
out where each cow belongs.
In February 2003. BBC reporter
Nathan Etungu watched the soldiers
work in a village north of Mbale. As
they moved through a herd of cattle,
trying to identify the true owners, an
elderly woman stood at the side. One
by one, she called out the names of
her cows. To the amusement of the
soldiers, as various cows heard her
voice, they lifted up their heads and
followed the woman.
The cows recognized the sound of
their owner's voice. She called them
by name and they followed.
God also speaks to us and says, "I
have redeemed you; I have callod
you by name, you are mine." (Isaiah
43:1) The quality of our life depends
on how we respond.
Jesus invested a significant
amount of time with his first
disciples. training them to recognize
his voice. In fact, he said that
listening to his voice is a key
indicator of whether or not someone
belongs to him. If he had been living

iml able to get the treatment he
needed. Because of that, he lost his
hearing.
For 57 years, Steve could not hear
music or laughter or human speech.
Even though he lived a full life,'he
still longed to hear the voices of the
people he loved.
In the winter of 2001, he learned
about a surgical procedure that
would allow sound waves to bypass
the damaged part of his ear and
travel directly to the auditory nerve.
On Jan. 30 of that year, he had the
operation.
The implanted device couldn't be
turned on. however, until the
swelling in the ear decreased - so
Steve and his doctors had to wait six
weeks to know if the operation had
been successful.
Steve was nervous and wondered
if the procedure had been in vain.
One blustery day, he and his wife Pat
went for a visit to the hospital. As
the audiologist programmed the
implant. he asked Steve's wife to say
something.
Pat Henning leaned toward her
husband and gently said, "I love
you.,,
For the first time in almost six
decades, Steve was able to hear. His
face broke into a smile. It was the
voice of his wife. It was a word of
love.
Can you hear the word that Jesus
is speaking to you?
