I I in Drayton. Both teams came out strong. Explosive shots and great saves made this a low scoring game. Brussels continued to push for the win but at the end of the third Drayton was victorious with a score of 2-1. In game two, Feb. 15, Brussels came prepared to tie the series, however ended up playing catch-up throughout the game. Tied at two, Drayton scored three in the third. Brussels was unable to find the twine. The final score was 5- 2. Brussels travelled to Drayt6n for game three, determined to get back into the series. End-to-end action made for some exciting hockey. Excellent plays were made by Brussels, however the Drayton goaltender . was solid. Brussels put up a great fight for the win, but Drayton struck three times in the third, and the Brussels squad couldn't answer the challenge. Drayton got game three and a sweep of the series with the 6-3 victory. Steady between the pipes were Brianne Wheeler and Ryan Smith. Offence was Brian Burgess, Ben Cowing, Westin McLeod, Blake Cardiff, Evan Ducharme, Randy Zwep, Gavin Bowers, James Dillon, Robert Cronin and Brendan Stretton. Defensive duties were handled by Cody Subject, Herbie Runstedler, Cole McLean, Thomas Johnston and Taylor Prior. Goals and assists in this series were follows: Ben Gowing, four goals, one assist; Taylor Prior, one goal, two assists; Westin McLeod, one goal, one assist; Brian Burgess, one goal; Cody Subject, one assist; Cole McLean, one assist. Coaching staff said, this was a great series for the team, a wine- from-behind squad in many games throughout the playoffs. Drayton takes series in three Where's the puck? (Elyse DeBruyn photo) Brussels Tykes fall to Seaforth Brussels Novices win B The Brussels Novices captured the B title at the Blyth Lions tournament this past-weekend. In game one, Brussels took on the local squad. Blyth got on the board first with a goal by Alex Peters, assisted by Kennan McDonald. Brussels' Anthony Vader responded with a goal in the second, assisted by Sean Dale. In the third period, Brock McLean scored unassisted to give his team the 2-1 victory. ' For game two the squad came up against Clifford. The opponents scored first, but less than a minute later, Adam Cousins knocked one in to tie it. In the second period Cousins scored two for a hattrick. With one second on the clock before the It's been mixed results for Brussels Midgets in recent WOAA hockey action. The team hosted Howick, Feb. 18 and edged their visitors 4-3. Nick Campbell, with help from Brent Wheeler, skated in to score the only first-period goal. Howick tied it early in the second, but Wheeler set up Adam McClure who put his team back in front. Brandon Blake came in unassisted to add some insurance going into the third. The Brussels Pre-Tykes continued their winning streak as they played against Monkton last Saturday morning. Despite the early 8 a.m. game time, these kids'were .ready to play. Monkton had 32 shots on their net, with Brussels scoring IS goals by Lexi Smith, two; Tim Waechter, buzzer, Clifford scored to pull within one goal. With the clock set for the third, Clifford came on strong, scoring two quick ones to take the lead. Cousins responded with one of his own to tie the contest at 4-4. Late in the period, however, Clifford hit their target to jump ahead. Fans thought it was over, but Cousins slapped in yet another with one second left in the game to tie it, and send the game into a five-minute overtime. The four-on-four was back and forth, but unrewarding as the game remained deadlocked. Now counting on a shoot-out to determine the victors, Clifford scorers found the net twice to Brussels once to claim the victory. It was a good thing too, as Howick put on the pressure. Mid-way through the period they pulled within one, but Wheeler cancelled it with an assist from McClure. Howick added another but it was not enough to take the game from Brussels. On Feb. 10 it was another close contest against Hanover at home. After a long period of no scoring, Blake finally put his team on the board with two minutes remaining.• Wheeler earned the assist. four; Kai Heimstra, five; Andrew Patton, two and Taylor Higgins, two. Assists were made by Waechter and Logan Kellington. Brussels players took turns in the net and with nine shots, Monkton managed to score four goals. The next game is in Brussels on , Saturday against Monkton at 9 a.m. In the B championship against Elma Logan Brussels again let their opponents take an early lead, but quickly cancelled it. With an Elma-Logan goal in the middle period, Brussels was again behind until the dying seconds when they popped one in. In the third, Brussels was able to hold the squad back and Cousins completed his hattrick in this game as the clock ticked down to the buzzer. A solid effort between the pipes was done by Nathan Watson. Team members are Watson, Kody higgins, Dale, Cousins, Vader, Hayden TenPas, Brody TenPas, McLean, Lane Sebastian, Jereniy Ross, Mitchell Kraemer and Jacob McGavin. The second period made Brussels fans nervous as the visitors. held their opponents down and scored two of their own. A third-period goal by Hanover seemed to spark the host team as they responded with two goals to tie. Greg Bowers and McClure lit the light,-and claimed the assists. On Feb. 22, away, the Midget Bulls were eliminated from further competition with a disappointing loss to Howick. The hosts took a strong first- .period lead with two goals, while shutting out the visitors. Wheeler came in to score in the second, with help from Cory Chapman and McClure. Unfortunately, Howick cancelled it a minute later. Chapman again brought his team close, with assists from Bowers -and Wheeler, ending the period down by one. Howick managed the only goal of the third, however, to claim the 4-2 victory. It was a big loss for the Brussels Tykes when Seaforth stormed into town Feb. 14 and skated away with a 9-2 victory. Both Brussels goals were scored by Brody TenPas. Busy between the pipes wag- Jc5sh Bridge. It was a different game the next day when the team hosted Blyth. Visitor Mathew VanWyk scored his team's lone goal, while Brussels players managed nine. TenPas and Brock McLean with a hattrick, teamed for the five first- period goals. Hayden Tenpas, Mitchell Kellington with two The Blyth PeeWee Local League minor hockey team finished its regular season on Sunday, Feb. 15 against Teeswater. Blyth opened the scoring in the first period with a goal by Jordan Bakelaar, assisted by Janneke Barten and Michael McDowell. Two minutes later McDowell notched Blyth's second goal, assisted by Danielle Bean. Teeswater responded with a single and Anthony Vader earned the assists. McLean and TenPas continued to put the pressure on the visitors with one goal each in the second. Assists went to Vader, Tanner Cardiff and Kellington. TenPas added one to his hattrick in the third, assisted by Reece McArter and Hayden TenPas. The latter turned around and scored one of his own in the dying seconds. Goalie for Brussels was Matt McNichol. The Brussels team is playing this coming weekend in a tournament in CI ifford. goal in the first and had the first goal in the second at the three-minute mark. Andrew Bailey had an outstanding game in net for Blyth. Their fist playoff game is Monday, Feb. 23.
