PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2004.
We're into the home stretch -of
February and with that little detail
comes the fact, that most of our
winter is in the past.
I, as do most of the folks who
choose to live in Huron County
It was quite a day at Huronlea on
Saturday as family and friends
gathered to help lifelong-area
resident Jim Smith celebrate 95
years.
Smith was born Feb. 19, 1909 at
Lot 6. Conc. 5, in Grey Twp. The
son of Oliphant and Mary Smith, he
was the seventh of nine children. He
is today, the last surviving child.
Educated at SS#3 Grey, Smith
met, then married Anne Inglis on
Sept. I, 1934. For 38 years he
farmed on the 16th concession of
Grey, known today as Moncrieff
Road. The couple had three children,
Ronald, who now lives in Harriston,
Donna (Gibbings), now of Clinton
and Gerald of RR2, Mildmay. The
family grew to include three
grandsons, one granddaughter and
three great-granddaughters.
Jim and Anne moved to Brussels
in 1972. 'She passed' away several
years ago.
People around town have always
known Jim for his stories. When able
he's been a fixture at the coffee
shops and area card parties.
He was a member of the long
defunct Gentlemen's Club in

seems to be in a league of its own.
as people talk long and passionately
about the snow and the cold. With
most of these conversations, the end
thought is when is it over and please
will this soon pass. That in itself
makes winter unique.
We rarely hear wishes for the
summer to pass or the beautiful
spring days to move on or even the
autumn to be over. No, only winter,
on a routine basis gets the death
wish from someone. So take heart
March is on its way.
Brussels and one of the original
members of the Brussels Curling
Club. He has always been actively
involved with the Agricultural
Society as well.
Jim's interest in community and
its events is as well-known as his
sense of humour and love of fun.
Jim moved to Huronlea in 1997.
where he continues to enjoy social
times and conversation.
Travel is on the 111111(1, of maii).. of
our residents as they conic and go
from various places of warmth
Each group of' travellers has their
favourite location and in that warn'
country their own \ ery special
place. Sale travel and enjoy the
respite.
March 5 at 7:3(1 p.m. is the World
,Day of Prayer service. For one day
of the year, people around the world
pause and worship in community,
all of them using the same order of
service. Pretty impressive. The
many countries involved take turns
setting the service and all use it and
have for many, many years. So join
this very special time in Brussels at
the Anglican Church.
At the Branch
By Jo-Ann McDonald
The Brussels Cadet Corp met
Tuesday evening at the Legion.
there were 14 Cadets in attendance
to practise drills and learn various
things. Discussions were held on
when to hold annual inspection in
May.
The Corps is in desperate need
of adult leaders. You do not have to
have military background but
would have to attend some training
sessions.
Captain Grobbo would
appreciate hearing from anyone
who would possibly be interested
and would explain what is required
of them. He is at the Branch on
Tuesday evenings from 6:30 until
9 p.m. Call 887-6562 or drop in to
talk with him.
On Wednesday afternoon, Nancy
Ackert held a farm succession
seminar in the lounge.
On Thursday, the Huron County
Dairy Producers held their annual
meeting beginning at 10:30 a.m.
Over 80 sat down to a roast beef
dinner.
The Thursday night darts had 12
players. Coming in first were
Lynda Shaw and Paul Gross. The
second-place finishers were Katie
Harrison and Adam Smith. The
high shots were John Harrison
with 133 and Katie Harrison with a
116.
