THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2004. We're into the home stretch -of February and with that little detail comes the fact, that most of our winter is in the past. I, as do most of the folks who choose to live in Huron County It was quite a day at Huronlea on Saturday as family and friends gathered to help lifelong-area resident Jim Smith celebrate 95 years. Smith was born Feb. 19, 1909 at Lot 6. Conc. 5, in Grey Twp. The son of Oliphant and Mary Smith, he was the seventh of nine children. He is today, the last surviving child. Educated at SS#3 Grey, Smith met, then married Anne Inglis on Sept. I, 1934. For 38 years he farmed on the 16th concession of Grey, known today as Moncrieff Road. The couple had three children, Ronald, who now lives in Harriston, Donna (Gibbings), now of Clinton and Gerald of RR2, Mildmay. The family grew to include three grandsons, one granddaughter and three great-granddaughters. Jim and Anne moved to Brussels in 1972. 'She passed' away several years ago. People around town have always known Jim for his stories. When able he's been a fixture at the coffee shops and area card parties. He was a member of the long defunct Gentlemen's Club in thoroughly enjoy the changing seasons as well as the many rewards that come from each one. Winter seems to be in a league of its own. as people talk long and passionately about the snow and the cold. With most of these conversations, the end thought is when is it over and please will this soon pass. That in itself makes winter unique. We rarely hear wishes for the summer to pass or the beautiful spring days to move on or even the autumn to be over. No, only winter, on a routine basis gets the death wish from someone. So take heart March is on its way. Brussels and one of the original members of the Brussels Curling Club. He has always been actively involved with the Agricultural Society as well. Jim's interest in community and its events is as well-known as his sense of humour and love of fun. Jim moved to Huronlea in 1997. where he continues to enjoy social times and conversation. Sale travel and enjoy the respite. March 5 at 7:3(1 p.m. is the World ,Day of Prayer service. For one day of the year, people around the world pause and worship in community, all of them using the same order of service. Pretty impressive. The many countries involved take turns setting the service and all use it and have for many, many years. So join this very special time in Brussels at the Anglican Church. At the Branch By Jo-Ann McDonald The Brussels Cadet Corp met Tuesday evening at the Legion. there were 14 Cadets in attendance to practise drills and learn various things. Discussions were held on when to hold annual inspection in May. The Corps is in desperate need of adult leaders. You do not have to have military background but would have to attend some training sessions. Captain Grobbo would appreciate hearing from anyone who would possibly be interested and would explain what is required of them. He is at the Branch on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 until 9 p.m. Call 887-6562 or drop in to talk with him. On Wednesday afternoon, Nancy Ackert held a farm succession seminar in the lounge. On Thursday, the Huron County Dairy Producers held their annual meeting beginning at 10:30 a.m. Over 80 sat down to a roast beef dinner. The Thursday night darts had 12 players. Coming in first were Lynda Shaw and Paul Gross. The second-place finishers were Katie Harrison and Adam Smith. The high shots were John Harrison with 133 and Katie Harrison with a 116. Comrade Rick McDonald attended the presidents' council meeting in Paisley where the upcoming spring convention was discussed. Also discussed was the Dominion convention being held in London this June. 95 years to celebrate Jim Smith of Brussels, celebrated a landmark in his life as he turned 95 years old on Feb. 19. He currently lives at Huronlea Retirement home in Brussels, where he celebrated the special day with family and friends.
