(Vicky Bremner photo) Exciting time for Bantams It has been an exciting past two weeks for the Blyth Bantam Bulldogs, as they have just completed their first playoff series. Strong play throughout the regular season resulted in the team earning a bye in the first round of playdowns. The second round began on a very stormy Wednesday, Jan. 28 in Ayton. Despite good play the home team was victorious winning 5-2 with the scoring summary as follows: goals, Tony Bean, Thomas LeComte; assists, Johnathon McDowell, John Bokhout. Not happy with their results in the first game, Blyth came storming back to defeat their Ayton opponents 11-I in game two played on Monday, Feb. 2 in Blyth. Goals for Blyth were The Brussels Midget Girls hockey team proudly walked away as champions in the International Silver Stick tournament last weekend in Elma Logan. Game one was a shutout for goalie Megan Bos as the girls won 2-0 against Sarnia. Sara McMullen scored both goals earning her MVP for the game. Assisting the goals were Shauna Berfelz and Jenna Shultz. The girls proved talent in another 2-0 win against Peterborough. Both goals were scored by Amanda Ellison who also received game MVP. Assisting her goals were Berfelz and Tyson Campbell. Bos had another shutout against The January-February winners at the Brussels Curling Club were: first, 44 points, Ernie Lewington, Jean Bewley. Steve Knight, Peggy Aitchison; second, 43 points, Doug Dale; Marilyn Jones, Darryl Morrison, Amanda Dorsch; third, scored by Bokhout, three; McDowell, one; Lecomte, two; Trevor McArter, one; Blake HesselSvood, one; Roman Sturzenegger, two. Assists for Blyth went to Bokhout, four; Derek Youngblut, McDowell; Sturzenegger, two. With the series tied 1-1, the Bulldogs returned to Ayton on Wednesday, Feb. 4. It was an action- packed game with the home team gaining the lead early. The Bantams were not prepared to return to Blyth trailing the series so they got down to business and won game three, 7-4. Goals for Blyth were by Youngblut, three; McDowell, Hesselwood, Bokhout. Assists went to Youngblut, two; Dallas Texas in game three. Berfelz scored two goals while Schultz, Mandi De Block and McMullen each scored one. Assisting the goals were De Block with four, Schultz with two and Michelle Cook with one. De Block was MVP for game three. It much a closer match against Markham-Stouffville in game four quarter-finals, but the girls were able to walk away with a 3-2 win. With 13 seconds left in the game, De Block scored. Cook and Kassie Avery also scored. The only assist was De Block and Berfelz was MVP for the game. 40.5 points, Steve Steiss, Travis Koehler, Catherine Thomet, Sandra Josling; fourth, 38.5 points, Jo-Ann McDonald, Jeff Cardiff, Jan Dietner, Shane Gibson. A wings and pizza Valentines party after curling was enjoyed by LeComte, two; Bokhout and McArter. Blyth returned home on Saturday, Feb. 7 leading the best of five series two games to one. The Dogs were determined to end the series and gained an early lead. Solid steady play resulted in a 9-2 victory. Scoring were Hesselwood, two; Bokhout, two; McArter, McDowell;: Sturzenegger, two. Assists went to McDowell, two; Youngblut, two; Curtis Robertson, two; Sturzenegger, Lee Watkins, and Hesselwood. Throughout the series Blyth netminder "Shiny Sean Cook" was solid between the pipes. The WOAA final series will see Blyth face off against Clifford beginning on Monday, Feb. 9. The girls celebrated a 5-1 victory over Ottawa Valley in the semi- finals. Berfelz scored two and De Block, Shay Gross and Ellison each-scored -one. Tara Roach and Cook assisted the goals. Jennifer Kowlton was MVP for the game. They met up with Sarnia again in the championship game and went undefeated in a 2-1 win. Berfelz scored both goals and Bos received MVP for the game. A strong defence was maintained throughout the tournament by Katelyn O'Rourke, Kendall Whitfield, Avery, Knowlton and Campbell. the curlers. Best Valentine's were Dona Knight and Gary Pipe. The McDonald rink was the best-dressed team. BUY? SELL? TRY CLASSIFIED j The Brussels Midgets took a big win over a hosting Hanover squad on Feb. 12. Greg Bowers; with an assist from Adam McClure tied it at one after Hanover had taken an early lead in the first. Brussels owned the second and third periods, however. The squad jumped up by three before allowing Hanover to score its second.. Getting the points for the visitors were Steven Ropp, McClure and Matt McClinchey, with assists from Brandon Blake, Mitch Blake, Tate Stephenson, Andrew McDonald and McCI ure. Hanover pulled within two, only to have Brussels cancel that and add The Blyth Atoms beat Normanby 6-3 in Ayton on Sunday night. Thursday the Dogs came out on top, 4-1. The team is looking to be the first team from Blyth to win the WOAA title, in a number of years, and can use all the support available on Thursday for game 4. The game takes place at 7 p.m. A Bulldog win sends them to the OMHA semi- finals. • The team consists of players from Blyth, Belgrave, Londesborough, and Auburn. Playing for the team another. McClure and Darcy Cook scored, while Bowers assisted on the latter. McClure tallied a hattrick with an early third-period unassisted goal. However, seconds later Hanover got one of their own, then came back with another before a minute had ticked by. That was all for the hosts, as Brussels came on with four more goals to finish the game with a commanding 11-5 win. Lighting the light for the visitors were Stephenson, McClinchey, Brent Wheeler and Cook. Creditted with assists were Bowers and McClure. are Matt Popp, John LeComte, Aaron Popp, Cody Richmond, Carly Whitfield, Jonathon Atkinson, Trevor Raynard, Kevin Pennington, Tyler Black, Kirby Cook, Adam Cronin, Caleb Brohm, and Kayla Black. The team is coached by Chad Haggitt, Cole Stewart, Karen Pennington, Kirk Stewart, and Mike Haggitt. Come out Thursday with horns, whistles and anything that makes noise, and cheer the Dogs on to a WOAA title.
