At the Branch
Brussels Cadets planning spring getaway
By Jo-Ann McDonald
The Brussels Optimists began the
week at the Brussels Legion Branch by
holding their monthly meeting
downstairs. The Optimists are inviting
members of their club, the Brussels
Lions, Brussels Fire Department and
members of the Brussels Legion to
attend and invite a friend to a Legion
fish fry and social evening. It will be
held at the Legion and the guest
speaker will be Jay Campbell the
weatherman for the New PL.
Legion members wishing to attend
should call the Branch ASAP.
The Cadets have finally been able to
resume meetings and are,now planning
for their spring getaway.
The Thursday night darts had 16
players. After playing seven -games,
two teams were tied for first place with
six wins apiece. A playoff decided the
winners, Cassie Bootzin and Bruce
Clark. Finishing second were Carol
Gross and John Harrison. There was a
tie for the men's high start with both
Paul Gross and Bob Cochrane
shooting 108. The ladies' high shot of
the night was by Sandra Josling with
114.
The Friday night supper of chicken
wings, fries and salad was enjoyed by
over 40 diners. This week is roast beef.
On Saturday, the euchre tournament
had 14 tables of players. The winning
couple with 79 points was Lloyd and
Lillian Appleby. Tied for second place
were Dennis and Aileen Leddy and
Harry and Grace Smith with 75 points
each. The not-so-lucky pair were
Gordon and Louise Bosman with only
47 points. Lucky lone hand winners
were Dorothy Caner and Willis Patter.
Away to Paisley to, play District
cribbage were four Comrades Eric
Ross, Norm Dobson. John Harrison
and Sandra Josling. They report having
a very, enjoyable day but will not
advance to provincial play in Ottawa.
Keep saving the pop tabs. Every
little bagful helps.
Keep Wednesday, Feb. 28 at. 7:30
p.m. open for public speaking.
Students from Grey Central and;
Brussels Public School, from Grades 1
- 8, the variety of topics, the
presentations, even the nervous hand
wringing makes for a wonderful
evening.
The cooking bee is in March. We are
looking for new recipes, foil pans,
spaghetti sauce, cheese, hamburger,
stewing beef, onions, etc. Items can be
dropped into the Branch between 4 and
6 p.m. any day.
There was a wonderful response to
our request for kneelaps. What's a
kneelap? It is a small blanket or throw
used for just over the knees and legs for
the mature residents and less-mobile
residents who feel the cold on their
lower body. Not to be too big, as to get
caught in the wheels of wheelchairs.
but no definite size:
The laps will be given to veterans
and residents of Parkwood Hospital.
London and to residents of Huronlea.
We have reports of six laps already
completed and more being worked on.
The Sunday night singles dance saw
just under 70 dance to the Country
Versatiles. The cold weather and
blustery days are keeping people off
the roads.
Well Cupid's day is past for another
year. Here's hoping you got a little lift
from Feb. 14. The sale of chocolate
and flowers is a big part of the
February economy and both do a great
service to the well-being of many.
Around this house the more the better.
The one advantage of being a
Valentine baby is that the day is well
advertised and so seldom forgotten.
And so another year has passed, new
numbers to remember and lots of
memories made once again. Thank
goodness the flowers outnumbered the
Willie Nelson tapes and so for another
year I guess I'll keep my present
friends.
The hockey crew is still busy, busy
with playoffs and • tournaments
keeping them all in top form and on
the road a lot. We had friends from
Wainfleet drop in on Sunday from a
weekend of hockey in Kincardine.
What a good surprise. They're usually
summer friends so that was a very
welcome treat.
The curling club has their plans set
to celebrate their 40th anniversary.
Sounds like a fun time of rots of
memories and remember whens. The
party is ready for March 27 so get your
reply back to the members so they can
save your spot.
The income forms are appearing
which means the end of February is in
sight. The next thing we know the
snow will be gone. Ah.
Enjoy your week. Touch base with
someone you haven't seen for a while.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
