THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2004. PAGE 19.
Grey Central Echo
Author celebrates literacy with students
Feb. 2 students at Grey Central
enjoyed a visit from author Kathy
Stinson.
Her visit was especially exciting
for the Grade 4 class, as they are
presently immersed in King of the
Castle, a novel that earned Kathy
Stinson a Silver Birch Award
nomination in 2002.
Mrs. Taylor's Grade 3 class joined
the Grade 4s in the Library for the
presentation, and later all the Grade 1
and 2 students came for a
presentation more geared toward
their interests.
She showed both groups samples
of her early writing that her mother
had saved.
In her presentation to the Grade 3
and Grade 4 classes, Ms. Stinson
talked about how books get
published. She talked about how the
ideas that form the basis for the story
can take shape and be influenced by
editors, publishers and illustrators.
She said non-fiction reading that
she did for enjoyment formed the
basis for her current Marie-Claire
stories, Dark Spring, A Season of
Sorrow and Visitors, now published
as a part of the Our Canadian Girl
series.
There were certainly many factors
that influenced her book Red is Best,
which was based on her daughter
Kelly's refusal to wear anything but
red when she was a toddler.
Students saw translations of Red is
Best, including a Spanish version
produced for South America that
altered not only the language, but
also some of the articles of red
clothing that Kelly loved, as children
in equatorial countries would not
relate to mittens and snow boots.
Another story called Big or Little she
wrote for her son, Matthew.
The children were also enchanted
with the picture of Kelly and
Matthew that Stinson shared. She
showed a picture of Kelly and
Matthew on Matthew's wedding day
Nine members of Huron East
District's Women's Institute met at
the home of Darlene Harding on
Groundhog Day for their winter
district directors' meeting.
The former Bluevale branch (now
disbanded) has placed its
Tweedsmuir books in the Wingham
Library and the Molesworth branch
has decided to disband as of April
2004.
Leone Foerter, provincial
advisory council member, gave her
report from the FWIO board
meeting held in January at Barrie.
Elsie Stephenson is the new FWIO
president and Joy Trimble is the new
board director for the western
region.
The Focus High for WI money is
slated for the Erland Lee Museum
Home in 2004. The year 2004 is the
10th anniversary of the Year of the
Family.
A Quilt Gala is going to be held in
September 2005 for two and a half
days. Members who quilt were
urged to get involved in this event
and enter their quilts.
Sharon Douglas won the
Excellence of Agriculture Award at
the Royal Winter Fair in November
2003. She and her husband are pork
producers in the Fordwich area.
Margaret E. McMahon noted
there are several offices which need
to be filled by the May 11 district
annual. The branch presidents of
Fordwich, Howick and Lakelet are
to assist in finding names to
complete the list of nominations.
with his sister Kelly, who was
appropriately dressed in a red gown.
A former teacher, Stinson also had
many of the children involved in
drama play.
In Miss Hill's Grade 1/2 class, they
are storytelling for the public
speaking contest. They are doing
days, weeks and months in math. In
social studies they learned that Willie
saw his shadow and they are learning
about communities.
Mrs. Smith's Grade 2 class is
winding up their fairy tale unit. They
worked hard to memorize and recite
their stories, and they are sending
three speakers to the gym on Feb. 10.
They are looking forward to
celebrating Valentine's Day with
their party taking place on Friday,
Feb. 13.
In Mrs. Taylor's Grade 3 class, they
are subtracting three-digit numbers in
math and are listening to each other's
speeches and stories. They are also
learning how plants and animals help
each other.
The Grade 4s are doing science
presentations. They are still enjoying
their King of the Castle novel study,
though speeches have been the main
focus for the •last week.
Congratulations to Shea McLean,
Ethan Nichol and Ryan Sholdice,
who will be representing Grade 4 at
the junior speech competition in the
gym.
In math, the Grade 4s are working
on area and perimeter. They are
drilling multiplication facts all the
time and have started applying these
facts to long multiplication questions.
In Miss Henry's Grade 7 class they
are having a math test on Friday on
perimeter, area, and circumference.
In history they are doing the
American Revolution. They . are
having a test on it in a week. In
science they are learning about the
particle theory. There is a test on it on
Monday. In grammar they are doing
punctuation. They are having a test
The ACWW church service is
scheduled for April 25 10:30 a.m. at
Brussels Mennonite Fellowship.
Majestic is the host branch and
Walton will assist them with the
lunch.
The 102nd district annual will be
May 11 at the Melville Presbyterian
Church, Brussels with the theme
Branching Out. The guest speaker
will give a presentation on meals for
one or two people.
Plans were also made for the 52nd
county rally on Sept. 27 at the
Gorrie United Church with the
theme From Your Kitchen
Cupboard. Mrs. Harding is to
arrange for the guest speaker. All
branches are to contribute articles
for an old-fashioned kitchen
cupboard display. It was decided to
have a potluck meal at noon.
Mrs. Agla presented the proposed
budget for the ensuring year. It was
suggested that each branch bring a
fundraising idea to the district
annual.
Mrs. Harding reported the fun and
learning committee has had several
successful craft workshops. The
tatting course proved to be very
popular, even though it is an art of
yesteryear.
President Lucy Hesse broached
the subject of amalgamation and a
lengthy discussion was held on the
idea. With many branches unsure of
their future, consideration needs to
be given to what options are
available to the remaining branches
in the district.
on it on Monday.
In music they are doing solos. In
Art they are shading shapes. In
geography they are starting a new
unit on agriculture. In gym they are
playing basketball and they finished
speeches this week.
Mr. Payne's Grade 8s finished their
speeches this week and they finished
their questions to Appointment with
Love. They started a new unit in
geography and history and they are
going to have a math test on Monday.
Mr. Garland's SCC class had been
presenting speeches and have started
to do geometry. They are also doing
different varieties of poetry such as
tongue twisters and rhyming poems.
The public speaking in the gym
will be held on the Feb. 10 at 9:15
a.m.
