But I know this cannot be so
Because it hurts me as much today
As it did five years ago.
Although you are gone, you can

If donations from enough service
_ clubs and individuals can be found,
public access defibrillators could
soon be in arenas, community halls
and schools across Huron, helping
-save lives.
Kevin McNabb of Huron County
Emergency Medical Services told
Huron County councillors, Feb. 5,
that a new automated defibrillator
had been installed last year at Pine
Lake Camp near Bayfield in a pilot
project.
Unlike defibrillators in the past
which required medical training to
read the rhythm of the heart, the new
machines are automated and give
instructions that anyone can follow
if someone is struck by a heart
attack: from calling 911 to giving
CPR to using the defibrillator. The
machines read the heart rhythm and
help people carry out the defibrilla-
tion.
These machines can save lives,
McNabb said, because people who
suffer heart arrest have a 90 per cent

chance of survival if defibrillation is
carried out within a minute but the
survival rate declines by 10 per cent
for every minute lost.
McNabb said currently the best
place to have a heart attack is at a
casino because anyone in trouble
will be quickly spotted by security
cameras and they have the defibrilla-
tors for emergencies.
The EMS would like to see similar
units installed in all public buildings
McNabb said, but needs donations
to make this possible. It costs $3,000
to $4,000 to buy the units. Huron
County EMS will provide training.
He said EMS hopes the units will
also be available in schools, both
because more children are having
heart attacks these days and because
children will then be accustomed to
using them and having them around.
