A Wake is a story of loss and
survival, of human frailty and its
incomparable will.
The first novel of Andrea Yungblut
of Howick Twp., delivers a message
of compassion and inspiration.
Taking place in a small Ontario
town, the fictional story is written
with a confident hand.
Clarice Forrest is a middle-aged
woman who has experienced the
greatest tragedy possible. Grief and
guilt bring her to the edge of insanity
as she sets down a plan to ruin the
man, Richard Mason, whom she
feels is responsible. In the process
she makes some surprising
discoveries about Mason and learns
and in 1987 he completed his first
carving of a bufflehead drake.
__Throughout the years he has
completed numerous sculptures of
bird species, but songbird carvings
have become his signature work.
As an artist, he has shown his
work in many different local and
provincial carving shows and
competitions.
In 2002 Forler won third place in
the Open Class Songbird category at
more about herself.
Yungblut, a former journalist,
skillfully paints a portrait of a
woman on the edge, and does so
with a compassion that makes
Clarice real despite her out-of-
control behaviour. She is not the sort
of person you would like to get to
know. But, when she ultimately must
face her own guilt, you easily
recognize the level of pain she must
bear as well.
With eloquence Yungblut leads her
readers through surprising twists and
turns that lead you satisfying to the
end. Not until the last few pages
does one discover the whole story of
Clarice's tragedy and the role Mason
played. It is a ploy that while
certainly keeping the reader
interested, can be somewhat
