Some facts regarding the issue o elder abuse The abuse of older adults, also referred to as elder abuse, is defined as: "Any action or inaction by any person which causes harm or threatens to cause harm to an older adult". A family member, a friend, a caregiver, a staff member at a care facility or anyone upon whom the older person relies on for the basic needs or services may cause the abuse. Abuse may take one or more of the following forms: Physical: • Physical assault by kicking, With Alzheimer month just over, The Cafe Guide issued its top 10 list for choosing a residence for an aging relative. Selecting a residence for your aging relative can present challenges. The variety of residences available (from long- term care to retirement to Alzheimer-specific residences) can cause confusion. Finding the right residence is as individual as you are - it's where you or your loved one will make a home, make new friends and live life to the fullest. Visit at different times and on different days during the week. 4. Decide how much you can afford to spend. Cost varies depending on the type of provider. There may be wide variances in cost - and availability. 5. Review the residence's latest inspection report. Tour the residence's kitchen and ask to review menus. 8. What type of activities does the residence run? 9. What type of amenities does the residence offer? 10. Arrange for a trial stay. Many residences permit overnight or short-term stay. The factors contributing to elder abuse are: caregiver stress, physical or mental impairment of dependent elder, continuing cycle of family violence and personal and financial problems. Why is this abuse seldom reported? There is a fear of being institutionalized, embarrassment, guilt and shame if the abuser is a family member, fear of punishment or retaliation by the abuser as victim is dependent on the abuser or lack of awareness of community resources. If you know someone who is being abused or an abuser, there is help available. Doctors, social workers, public health nurses or the police can and will help.
