When we lived in Northwestern
Ontario, we had a rustic cabin on
Rainy Lake. In the quiet of early
morning, I could watch the area
wildlife as I sipped a cup of coffee.
The entertainment was seasonal.
In spring, a variety of birds chattered
as they built nests and mergansers
paraded their young past our dock.In
summer loons dived for their
breakfast, bees buzzed in the
I Will Pour Out My Spirit, was the

meeting with prayer. Shirley McCall
and Valerie Sharp led in worship.
The roll was answered by 37
members.
Rev. Anne Yu-Hibbs introduced
the Bible study, Making

a mink would stop on the large rock
to feast on a fish. The fall brought
geese who honked goodbye as they
headed south and much activity on
the part of our_resident chipmunk as
he hoarded food in the nearby
woodpile.
My view was often blocked in
winter by a thin, shiny layer of ice
crystals. On a cold morning, I would
have to wait for the sun to the warm
the window before I could see the
tracks of rabbits and birds in the
snow.
When I read the account of Jesus'
baptism in Luke's gospel, I see the

warmth of sun opening the view on
my window as a good image for
baptism with the fire of the Holy
Spirit. Like the sun melting the ice
crystals that obstructed my view, the
Holy Spirit melts the iciness within
that shuts out God and others.
When we are baptized with the
Holy Spirit, self- centredness is gone
and we see the holiness of God
which surrounds us.
We then are empowered to live
with a passion, a fire, that enables us
to share God's love, God's justice,
and God's peace. As a people of
God, may we claim our baptism in
the living of each day.
