He [Jesus] will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. Luke 3:16 When we lived in Northwestern Ontario, we had a rustic cabin on Rainy Lake. In the quiet of early morning, I could watch the area wildlife as I sipped a cup of coffee. The entertainment was seasonal. In spring, a variety of birds chattered as they built nests and mergansers paraded their young past our dock.In summer loons dived for their breakfast, bees buzzed in the I Will Pour Out My Spirit, was the theme for the annual meeting of Maitland Presbyterial WMS held on Jan. 19 at St. Andrew's Church, Wingham. President 'Marilyn Maclntyre welcomed all and opened the meeting with prayer. Shirley McCall and Valerie Sharp led in worship. The roll was answered by 37 members. Rev. Anne Yu-Hibbs introduced the Bible study, Making Connections - The Bhil people of India. The sessions were developed out of the themes of the Great Commission in Matthew 28: 16-20 Special guests Members of Brussels Mennonite Fellowship had a special presentation on Sunday from the Teen Challenge Farm, a facility that helps men with drug and alcohol problems quit for good. The fall brought geese who honked goodbye as they headed south and much activity on the part of our_resident chipmunk as he hoarded food in the nearby woodpile. My view was often blocked in winter by a thin, shiny layer of ice crystals. On a cold morning, I would have to wait for the sun to the warm the window before I could see the tracks of rabbits and birds in the snow. When I read the account of Jesus' baptism in Luke's gospel, I see the "Go and make disciples of all the nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy_ Spirit." The WMS Synodical will be held on April 20 and April 21 at Drummondhill Church in Niagara Falls. An invitation to the spring rally held on May 31 was extended by Kincardine WMS. The honourary membership will be given by Molesworth. The child to camp is from Brussels. Rev. Yu-Hibbs installed the officers for 2004. Honourary warmth of sun opening the view on my window as a good image for baptism with the fire of the Holy Spirit. Like the sun melting the ice crystals that obstructed my view, the Holy Spirit melts the iciness within that shuts out God and others. When we are baptized with the Holy Spirit, self- centredness is gone and we see the holiness of God which surrounds us. We then are empowered to live with a passion, a fire, that enables us to share God's love, God's justice, and God's peace.
