Brussels Livestock report
Lambs sell $5-$10 lower on Thursday
Total receipts for Brussels
Livestock for the week ending Jan.
30 were 1,789 head of cattle, 409
lambs and goats.
On Tuesday the fed steers and
heifers sold on a steady active trade
with prices as follows: fancy steers
and heifers, $90 to $102.25; choice
steers and heifers, $84 to $88; sec-
ond cut steers and heifers, $80 to
$84. Cows sold on a steady market.
On Thursday veal sold on a steady
market while lambs sold $5 to $10
lower. On Friday calves sold steady.
The yearling steers sold on a strong
trade while the yearling heifers sold
under pressure.
There were 440 steers on offer.
Enoch Martin, Linwood, consigned
two limousin steers averaging 1,403
lbs. which sold to Norwich Packers
for $102.25. His overall offering of
fifteen steers averaged 1,468 lbs.

$95.61. Ten steers consigned by
Levi Sherk, St. Clements, averaged
1,382 lbs. selling for an average
price of $91.90 with his top limousin
steer weighing 1,330 lbs., selling to
Dominion Meat Packers for $98.

ing 1,403 lbs. selling for an average
price of $92.12 with his top two gold
steers averaging 1,340 lbs. selling to

1,450 lbs. selling to Norwich
Packers for $97.50. His overall
offering of twelve steers averaged
1,420 lbs. selling for an average

president, Ron Bonnett, will be in
Huron County this week as part of a
tour to meet farmers and hear first-
hand what their key issues are.
Bonnett will be at the Betty
Cardno Centre in Clinton, Friday,
Feb. 6 for a town hall meeting with
farmers at 10 a.m. That afternoon he
moves on to Stratford Coliseum.
Both of these sessions are open to
the public. Bonnett looks forward to
constructive meetings as he gathers
input in advance of a promised
meeting with Ontario Premier
Dalton McGuinty.
The tour begins Feb. 5 in
Middlesex at the Fort Rose Maple
Company and Pancake House,
where Bonnett will hear the deepen-
ing concerns of maple syrupo pro-
ducers over the re-classification of
their production facilities to indus-
trial from agricultural for assess-
ment purposes.
Bonnett has already met with
Ontario finance minister, Greg
Sorbara to outline the situation. He
has requested an opportunity to
work with the Municipal Property
Assessment Corporation (MPAC) to
develop a definition of agriculture to
protect farmers from such re-classi-
fication.
Properties like the maple syrup
facilities, that have been re-classi-
fied by MPAC, face thousands of
dollars in added property taxes.

1,377 lbs. selling for an average
price of $91.35 with their top limou-
sin heifer weighing 1,315 lbs. selling
to Norwich Packers for $99.50. Bill,

Wingham, consigned one black
heifer weighing 1,355 lbs. which
sold to Dominion Meat Packers for
$99.50. Their overall offering of
twenty-three heifers averaged 1,383
lbs. selling for an average price of
$91.04.

Matthew Edgar, Wroxeter, weighed
1,250 lbs. selling to Norwich
Early that afternoon, Bonnett will
be at the Alvinston Arena to meet
and talk with producers, then it's off
to the home of Mark Rankin in
Lambton for a meeting with the cat-
tlemen association members to
review the impacts of BSE and look
for possible solutions.
From there, Bonnett will be in
Kent and Essex Counties where he
will speak with the executive mem-
bers of the local federations of agri-
culture. This will be followed by
further discussions with federation
board members.
