(Vicky Bremner photo) Another victory for Brussels Pre-Tykes Brussels Midgets lose playoff series After three games this past week, the Brussels Midgets lost the first round of playoffs against Drayton. On Jan. 20, the team kept it close, but failed to seal the victory against the home team. Scoring for the visitors in this 4-2 effort were Brent Wheeler, unassisted and Steve Ropp, with an assist by Greg Bowers. Jan. 23, Drayton wasn't helped by home-ice advantage, letting their visitors steal a 7-6 win in overtime. This nail-biter got off to a scary start with ,Drayton scoring four before Brussels got on the board in the first. Matt McClinchey and Pat Rushton teamed to set up Brandon Blake, who skated in for the goal. With just five minutes in the period, McClinchey brought his team within two. Robbie Semple and Blake earned the assists. Drayton increased the lead early in the second, but McClinchey scored unassisted to cancel it soon after. The powerskaters were tested and many successfully passed their levels: Level One Silver, Derek deBoer, Kenny Huether, Ryan Nesbitt; Level One Gold, Loretta Thompson, Ruben deVries, Matthew VanWyk, Michael VanWyk, Laura Higgins, Caroline McDowell; Level a solid lead into the third. Not defeated yet,_Brussels showed their mettle, holding their opponents down, while scoring three to tie it. McClinchey, Tate Stephenson and Blake bulged the twine. Assists went to Blake, Wheeler and McClinchey. The game went into overtime and not content with a hattrick, McClinchey scored the game winner. Darcy Cook earned the assist. Brussels appeared to have run out of steam in game three, however, as they gave up a 10-2 victory on home ice, Jan. 24. The game began much the same as the one before with Drayton taking a 4-2 lead into the second period. First-period goals for Brussels had been scored by McClinchey and Adam McClure. Assisting were Rushton and Greg Bowers. That was it for the hosts unfortunately as Drayton kept the pressure on through the remainder of the game, and took the series three games to one. In the CanSkate Program, the following skaters have passed their levels: CanSkate 1, Justine Verburg, Lexi Aitken, Jamie Lee Eckert, Paige Gibbings, Brendan Howson, Quinton Hakkers; CanSkate 2, Kaitlyn Bos, Gabrielle Ducharme, Brussels Tykes continue winning ways The Brussels Tykes continued their winning ways on the weekend with an 8-4 win at home against BCH 2 on Saturday, then a 5-2 victory away in Zurich on Sunday. Jan. 24, it was Brock McLean and Brody TenPas who led the way to victory scoring all of the team's goals. McLean got it started in the first, with an assist from TenPas and Sarah Dillon. BCH responded with one of their own, but Hayden TenPas handed it to McLean who scored two minutes later. B. TenPas finished the scoring in the first, with a goal set up by Mitchell Kellington and Reece McArter. The second period kept things tight with each team scoring three. TenPas got two and McLean a single. Assists went to H. TenPas, Wyatt Ducharme and Kellington. In the third period, BCH failed to add to their tally, while McLean scored one -unassisted and another with help from Dillon to finish the game. Goalie for the game was Bryce Armstrong. The next day, B. TenPas led the scoring onslaught with a hattrick, plus one. Brock McLean, however, got the visitors started with a first period, unassisted goal. Zurich tied it just before the buzzer, then took the lead in the second. With just over five minutes left in the period, TenPas skated in alone to tie it, then a minute later lit the light yet again. McLean earned the assist. With a one-point lead to begin the final period, Brussels held back their hosts, while TenPas scored two more. Josh Bridge and Dillon set up the play on the first hattrick goal. While his brother was keeping the home-team goalie busy, Hayden TenPas gave a solid effort in the Brussels net. Coaches applauded the great play and impressive defence. Snowmobile stolen in Seaforth On Jan. 25 at 3 a.m. a snowmobile was reported stolen in the Town of Seaforth part of Huron East. The owner told police that at midnight a black 2004 Arctic Cat 700 with licence #924192 had been left parked behind Seaforth Plumbing and Heating just off Goderich Street, while a group of them had attended the local tavern. Sometime between midnight and 1:30 a.m. the $11,000 machine was stolen. If you have information about this theft call the local OPP or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222- 8477(TIPS). It was another win for the Brussels Pre-Tykes on Saturday as they played against Listowel. Listowel players took turns in the net saving 14 shots, but Lexi Smith still scored three goals, and Tim Waechter scored a goal; all unassisted. Faith Sebastian had two great- attempts, but the buzzer stopped her from scoring. By Elyse DeBruyn Citizen staff Morris-Turnberry council agreed at its Ian. 20 meeting to discuss the application for financial support to put more Crime Stoppers signs around the municipality during their meeting on Jan. 20. Steve Beasley of the OPP, told council that Crime Stoppers is in its final stages for a Trillium grant application that would allow them to put 70 - 80 signs up in the county. He said five to seven signs would be put up throughout Morris-Turnberry costing anywhere from $500 to $600 for the signs, plus the equipment and labour to put them up.
