Things shaping up for Wingham party By Bonnie Gropp Citizen editor Things are shaping up nicely for Wingham's 125th Homecoming celebration this summer. Committee chairman Al Harrison attended the Monday night meeting of North Huron council to update them on the progress. While he Wingham's Communities in Bloom made its presentation for support to North Huron council on Monday night. Elayne Rintoul presented a budget and items for consideration. It was decided that these items be prioritized then returned to council. *** Accounts in the amount of $752,545 were approved for payment. *** Several recommendations from the public works committee were approved. A high volume bucket will be purchased from Huron Tractor for $780 plus taxes for the Blyth loader tractor. During the continued snap of cold air temperatures, the Huron County Health Unit recommends that residents take precautions to avoid overexposure. Overexposure to cold temperatures may result in hypothermia or frostbite. Symptoms of frostbite include skin turning red, blue or a grey/white. Fingers, toes, ears, and noses are particularly at risk for frostbite and may feel numb and stiff. Check the temperature and wind chill before you go outdoors to make sure that you are dressed appropriately for the weather. According to Environment Canada, when temperatures fall between -28 and -39°C due to wind chill, there is an increased risk for frostbite since exposed skin can freeze in 10 to 30 minutes. If you must be outside, check face, fingers, toes, ears and nose for numbness or whiteness. There is an increased risk of hypothermia if outside for long periods without adequate protection. Safe Kids Canada recommends that children should play indoors: • if the temperature falls below - 25°C regardless of the wind chill factor; or, • if the wind chill factor is reported as -28°C or greater. To avoid hypothermia or frostbite stressed that the schedule of events is still in the draft stages, he was able to highlight a few specifics. The celebration, is set to begin on Wednesday night, June 30 and run until July 4. The high school reunion is planned for July 2. Harrison noted that Miss Canada will be in town for two of those days visiting at hospitals and nursing homes in addition to being a *** The acting director of public works, Ralph Campbell, will investigate the cost and testing required to proceed with the construction of Dinsley Street in Blyth: *** A tour of public works projects and equipment in the township will be done on Feb. 27 to assist council and staff with budgetting for 2004. *** Councillor Murray Nesbitt asked that public works look at snow removal on sidewalks in Blyth. He felt that the crew was "clearing more than was necessary." Nesbitt said that while it was during the extreme cold, the Health Unit recommends these precautions: • limit outdoor activity. • dress in layers of warm clothing, with an outer layer that is wind- resistant. • wear a hat, mittens, and a neck tube or full face mask. • drink plenty of caffeine-free fluids to avoid dehydration. • avoid alcohol. If you suspect frostbite: • warm the affected area next to warmer skin or immerse in warm, not hot water • do not rub the area. Re-warming may take 30-60 minutes. •seek emergency medical treatment for a case of severe, blistering frost bite. Stating that he anticipates crowds in excess of 10,000 Harrison added that a big part of the celebration focuses on open houses and dedications, an opportunity to showcase • what Wingham offers. One of these dedications is to be at the cemetery. Harrison explained that the committee had been important the downtown be cleared he didn't feel they needed to proceed as far as they did. *** Letters have been received from Wal-Mart and Canadian Tire advising that there is no interest in locating their stores in Wingham at this time. working with the Ontario Heritage Foundation on a plaque featuring the history of the Wingham cemeteries.
