Greeting at Melville. Presbyterian
Church last Sunday morning were
Jim and Lois Lee. Mary Douma was
organist, and Rev. Cathrine
Campbell led the congregation in the
responsive reading of Psalm 36: 5 -
10.
For the children's story, Rev.
Campbell talked about teams, and as
the children tried to describe a
soccer team, certain choir members
were changing places to each claim
the seat of the organist.
Rev. Campbell asked the children
which of those could play the organ,
and when they all decided Mrs.
Douma was the best one, those extra
volunteers were sent back to their
seats. In this way, Rev. Campbell
asserted that all are given special
gifts, and that each should exploit
their own special talents to the
benefit of everyone.

the Blyth Chapel on Saturday, Jan.
17 at 2 p.m.
Spring interment will be in Ball's

KEN HAMM
The community of Blyth was
saddened to hear of the sudden
passing of a long-time local
businessman at his residence.
Kenneth' Hamm died Saturday,
Jan. 17, 2004. He was in his 71st
Scripture was Isaiah 62: 1 = 5; 1
Corinthians 12: 1 - 11; and John 2: 1
- 11, with Jim Armstrong assisting
Rev. Campbell as reader.
The hymn, 0 Perfect Love, led
into the sermon, Delightful, which
was on gifts and weddings and
Jesus's first miracle, the changing of
water into wine at the wedding in
Cana. That special prayer hymn was
especially for weddings and was
written as a gift to the author's sister.
Christians first find Jesus as an
adult enjoying a wedding, not in a
synagogue where they think he
should be. "Do not condemn the
water and praise the wine", said Rev.
Campbell. "All are gifts and to be
treated equally in our lives."
Collection was taken up by
Leanne Armstrong, Maurice Douma
and Doug McArter.
On Tuesday night, the Melville
year.
It was 1948 when Ken joined
Hamm's Car Sales, the company
started eight years before by his
father and uncle. At that time Ken
worked as bookkeeper. He and his
brothers worked together until
selling the business several years
ago.
He was the dear brother of George
and Mary Hamm and Murray and
Donna Hamm all of Blyth. Ken will
be sadly missed by several nieces
and nephews. He was the beloved
nephew of Verna Hamm of
Sundridge, Betty Bowes of Blyth,
Alice Gillespie of Ayr and Everett
Hussie of Ayr. Many cousins also
Guild and WMS will hold its annual
potluck supper meeting. The
afternoon Bible study hosted by
Helen Elliott will resume on
Thursday at 2 p.m.

followed by a potluck lunch, which
will precede the annual meeting of
the church.
Last weekend a games night was
held at Melville Presbyterian Church
with a good group assembled for
Scrabble, Lost Heir, Trivial Pursuit
and other challenges. Gordon and
Julia Mitchell organized the
evening.
Gerald Gibson has assembled a
collection of Melville memorabilia
at the back of the church. This
includes carved models of church
and parishioners, ceremonial items
used in the early church, and old
Bibles.
survive him.
Ken was predeceased by his
parents George and Sarah (Gillespie)
Hamm.
Friends were received at the Blyth
Visitation Centre, 407 Queen St. on
Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A
private family service was held on
Wednesday, Jan. 21.
Interment will be at Blyth Union
Cemetery.
As expressions of sympathy,
memorial donations to a charity of
one's choice would be greatly

One such item, a portable
baptismal font, is a mystery to all
about who donated it and when, so if
anyone knows its history, please let
someone at Melville know.
The display focuses our interest on
our upcoming 150th anniversary
celebrations which will be held on
several occasions throughout this
year.
The 150th Anniversary committee
will be meeting at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 3.
