simply replied, "Who are my mother
and my brethren?" And looking
around on those who sat about him,
he said, "Here are my mother and
my brethren!
Whoever does the will of God is
my brother, and sister, and mother."
Do I truly want peace? Do I truly
want unity? Do I want to love my
neighbour? If so, the only possible
path is to do the will of God, to
radically and sincerely ask (pray) the
Holy Spirit "What do you want me
to do" then do it.
A simple answer, yet terribly hard
to do.

From the Minister's Study
Celebrating a week of prayer for Christian unity
By Father John Johnson
St. Michael's Roman Catholic
Church, Blyth
"In the early days of Christianity
the Christian community was one,
and while living that unity has never
been easy, the early church stands
through the centuries as the primary
model of a community that could
live in peace and proclaim that peace
effectively.
It is not so today: we are not yet
fully united, and our witness to
peace is compromised accordingly.
Those who wish peace would do
well to pray and strive for unity.
Mindful of this relationship, the
church is called to pray for peace in
unity and for unity in peace."
Pontifical Council for Promoting
Christian Unity.
The theme for the Week of Prayer
for Christian Unity is very simple,
yet terribly profound. We all seek it,
we all talk about it, however many
believe it is impossible. What could
it be?
The answer is "peace." Why is it
so elusive, seemingly beyond our
grasp? Why does it seem utopian?
It may be because so few seek
peace in the right place. We cannot
find it solely in one another, it
cannot be found only in other
created places or things. Surely other
people, i.e. our neighbour, going for
a walk or retreating to a solitary
place can help, however none of
these will totally satisfy or be
effective.
So then, if we sincerely want
peace, where can we go? To whom
can I speak?
If we truly want peace there is
only one answer. My peace I give to
you (John 14: 23-31) The answer is
Jesus Christ, the only Son of the
Father. He is "all and in all" and only
He. We must turn and go to Him,
there is no other way.
Is it enough to pray to Jesus for
peace? This is certainly a good
beginning, however it is not enough.
Why, you ask? Because real peace
suggests that we are truly, in mind
and heart, brothers and sisters. I
must love my neighbour for real
peace and real love requires more
than prayer.
How then can I really love my
neighbour? When told that "Your
mother, and your brothers are
outside, asking for you" Jesus
