Dynamites win
tournament gold
Jan. 16 the Brussels PeeWees
opened playoffs against Howick.
Never meeting this team in regular
season play made for an interesting
game.
Howick opened the scoring at the
five-minute mark. Brussels
answered their challenge in the first
with an unassisted goal by Evan
Ducharme.
After end-to-end action in the
second the teams were tied at two
apiece. Brussels' second goal was
scored by Brendan Stretton, assisted
by Cody Subject and Blake Cardiff.
Brussels came out flying in the
third with four quick goals. The
third goal was scored by Westin
McLeod. Assist went to Taylor Prior.
The fourth goal was scored by Prior.
Then Subject found the net with an
assist to Ben Gowing. to finish the
scoring McLeod got his second of
the night. The assist went to Brian
Burgess and Gowing.
Howick in turn scored two quick
ones to make the final 6-4 for the
home team. Great goaltending was
provided by Ryan Smith.
With a win under their belts the
PeeWees travelled to the nest of the
Howick Hornets Sunday, Jan. 18.
Prior opened the scoring, assisted
by Gowing. Before the end of the
period Prior got his second with an
assist from Ducharme.
Prior then scored his hattrick.
Gowing assisted.
On Jan. 17 and 18 there was a
junior broomball tournament held in
Mildmay. This regional tournament
drew two teams each from Blyth and
Mildmay, as well as teams from
Seaforth and Palmerston.
The gold medal for the PeeWee
division was awarded to Blyth
Dynamites, formerly known as the
Blyth Buzzards.
To win the gold they had to work
very hard. The first-game was held at
8:30 a.m. with a disappointing loss of
1-0 against the Mildmay Black
Hawks.
The second game was held at 12:15
p.m. against Palmerston. Blyth won
this game by a score of 1-0, with the
goal scored by Brent Drost on an
assist from Morgan Bos.
The third game was held at 4:45
p.m. against the yellow Blyth Rollers.
The Dynamites squeezed by with a
winning score of 1-0. Drost scored
Midgets lose
The Brussels Midgets opened their
WOAA playoffs against Drayton at
home Jan. 16. The team came up
short losing 7-2.
Darcey Cook with an assist from
Kyle Procter got the scoring started
for the local team in the first period,
to tie the game at one apiece.
Drayton continued to pour it on,
however, adding two more in the
first, then two in the second, while
with an assist from Bos.
On Sunday, they played the
Mildmay Black Hawks at 11:30 a.m.
this was a very intense game. Derek
Logtenberg scored with an assist from
Matthew Terpstra. The game had to
go into overtime as it was tied 1-1.
While shorthanded, due to a penalty
against Blyth, Drost scored with an
assist from Larissa Jenkins.
This win earned them a spot in the
finals against the Mildmay Redwings
at 2:30 p.m. There was no score after
regulation time so they had to go into
overtime once again. Chantel
Warwick passed the ball to Drost for
the goal, giving the Dynamites a win
of 1-0.
The entire team played their best to
come home with a gold medal,
Goaltender, Courtney Bos allowed
only two goals scored against her
during the tournament. Coaches are
Harry Otten and Chastity Bos.

The visitors increased their lead
even more with an early third period
goal. Then Steven Ropp skated in to
get Brussels' only goal of the third
period. Brandon Blake earned the
assist. That was it for the locals,
however, as Drayton squeaked out
one more with 20 seconds on the
clock.
In the second Brussels' Brian
Burgess gave the squad the lead. The
assist went to Randy Zwep.
Howick was also on the board
with three of their own. After a well-
deserved rest, both teams striving
for the win, came on strong in the
third. The offensive contributors
were Robert Cronin, James Dillon
and Gavin Bowers.
The fifth and only goal scored in
the third was by Gowing with assists
from Subject and Herbie Runstedler.
Hard work in the corners was
provided by Cole McLean and
Thomas Johnston.
Brianne Wheeler did a super job
between the pipes for Brussels.
Team work and a small dose of
pumping and grinding gaVe Brussels
the 2-0 lead in the series.

win playoff series
in two straight
Playoffs have begun for the
Brussels Bantams and in the first
round against Howick, the team took
the series in two straight.
On Jan. 14 Brussels hosted
Howick and edged them 4-3.
With two goals by Wade
Stephenson, the squad took a 2-1
lead into the second period. Dan
Dwyer picked up an assist.
Howick tied it early in the second,
but Jamie Cochrane and Zachery
Hoegy set up Christopher Jutzi who
skated in to put his team up by one
again.
Things got tense in the third when
the visitors, with six minutes on the
clock tied it at three apiece. But less
than three minutes later Shane
Cochrane lit the light to finish the
scoring and seal the victory for the
home team.
Stephenson and Andrew Baker
were creditted with the
assists.
On Jan. 16, Brussels travelled to
Howick and upset the hosts 5-3.
Brussels had a solid lead at the end
of the first with three goals to
Howick's one. Jutzi led the way with
two, with S. Cochrane scoring the
third. Nathan Prior got two assists,
while Stephenson and Ryan Jutzi got
singles.
In the second period, Brussels
added early to their lead when C.
Jutzi went in alone to bulge the
twine. Prior then did some damage
with a goal, set up by Jordan
Campbell.
Howick responded with two of
their own, but the visitors held on
through a scoreless third to win the
series and advance.
