At the Branch Stormy weather cancels Cadet meeting FROM BRUSSELS 12 present for meeting Majestic Women's Institute held its first meeting of 2004 in the Brussels Library with 12 persons present. President Kathy Bridge introduced Joe Seili, owner and operator of the Huron Feeding Systems of Brussels. He gave an outline of equipment made, especially grain handling equipment. Japan gets grain bins for beans. They are very particular as they do not mix varieties. Huron Feeding systems employs 16 people during the summer which is their busiest time. They have expanded their buildings four times. The next UFO day will be held at the home of Ruth Sauve-Schade on Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. The next soup, sandwich and euchre will be held on March 4. Mrs. Bridge presented Yvonne Knight with a 40-year membership pin. The FWIO conference will be held at Durham College at Oshawa on June 11 - 13. Fees are $230. The final day for payment is March 31. Mrs. Hesse gave a reading, then was auctioneer for the secret auction, the proceeds of which went to ACWW. Happy Birthday was sung to Leona Armstrong. We took a little scoot that way last week and as part of the things to do in winter in that area, you skate in the great outdoors. Thursday night darts had 11 players. The top player was John Harrison in first place who as well had high shot for the men with 133. Coming in second were Paul Gross and Julie Harrison while third place went to Lisa Glanville and Harry Smith. The high ladies' shot was by Sandra Josling with 138. Saturday was a busy day at the Branch. There were 13 tables in play at euchre. First prize went to Bev Hayden and Mary McIntosh with 74 points. Second-place teams were tied with 71 points each. They were From near the Parliament buildings across the city, or maybe around the city, better describes the wandering, now frozen water of the Rideau Canal, the long rink is open to the public as soon as the ice is thick and flooded. Skaters of all sizes and ages soon appear. It is a very popular thing to do and so much fun. Skating part of the seven available kilometres on the world's longest rink is a great way to pass time. The cards were not kind to Lloyd and Lillian Appleby who had 39 points for low prize. Free passes for lone hands went to Mac Smith and Hilda Holmes. Euchre is every two weeks. The Branch hosted a fish fry on Saturday to satisfy over 100 fish lovers. Thanks to the men for braving the cold and Lisa who did the running. The dinners are a great fundraiser for the Branch and we have quite a few bookings for the summer. We are looking for a few more comrades to help and take a turn once in awhile. Please call the Branch or but well worth it for the thrill. Just to top the winter interlude nephew Patrick, Jim's oldest son, let Uncle Ralph take him to a Senator's game. Free tickets in the third row made the game a really good one. There is something so nice about listening to the weather report and finding that we are not getting all the white stuff but that it is being shared around. A reminder that we have walkers and wheelchairs available for loan from the Branch to anyone who is in need. We are still collecting pop tabs and every little bagful helps. We send them to the Elora Branch which in turn exchange them for wheelchairs. If you have not paid your dues by Jan. 31 you will not be a member in good standing and may possibly lose your membership. Drop by or send in your payment. We are always looking for new people to join the Branch and the criteria to join has changed in the last few years. Check us out or call membership chairman John Harrison for information. The combined Brussels/Listowel pipers and drummers always do a fantastic job and we hope there will be an appreciative crowd. The band has welcomed a few new members interested in learning drumming and that is great news. If anyone else is interested call Donald Martin.
