Obituaries
LAURA ALICE MARY
BARCHARD
Mrs. Laura Barchard of Highland
Apartments, Brussels, formerly of
Wingham and Toronto passed away at
her residence on Saturday, Jan. 10,
2004. She was 86.
She was the beloved wife of the late
William S. Barchard who
predeceased her in 1998. Mrs.
Barchard was loved and cared for by
dear friends Allan Paterson and Grant
Goodick, of RR3, Wingham. She was
the sister-in-law of Betty Elliott of St.
Louis, Missouri and is also survived
by three nieces.
Cremation has taken place with
Sympathy
placement of ashes to be held later in
Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto.
Memorial services will be held at
Huronlea, Brussels at a later date.
Memorial donations to the Heart
and Stroke Foundation of Ontario
would be appreciated as expressions
of sympathy and may be placed
through McBurney Funeral Home,
Wingham.
KLAAS DE JONG
Klaas de Jong of Blyth passed away
at Seaforth Manor Retirement Home
on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004. He was in
his 90th year.
Mr. de Jong was born in St. Jacob,
the Netherlands on June 13, 1914 and
extended

will still be welcomed.

Mary Mann's home on Wednesday,
Jan. 21 at 9:30 a.m. Anyone

Hendrika (Krotje) de Jong. Mr. de
Jong was a retired farmer and a
member of St. Michael's Roman
Catholic Church, Blyth.
He was the beloved husband of
Anna (Zijm) de Jong. He was the
loving father of Jacob and Margaret
de Jong of Sackville, NS, John and
Sharon de Jong of Teeswater, Trudy
Huber of Listowel, Henny and Ben
Terpstra of RR2, Atwood, Mary Ann
and John Vernooy of RR3, Bright,
Catherine and Charles Terpstra of
RR4, Brussels, Lia and Jack Snell of
Greeting at Melville Presbyterian
Church last Sunday morning were
Barry and Sharon Bondi and family.
With Crystal McLellan as organist
and Rev. Cathrine Campbell leading
the service, The Lord Is My
Shepherd was sung, followed by the
congregational greeting and Psalm
29 read responsively.
Scripture lesson for the service
was Isaiah 43: 1-13; ACts 8: 9-25 and
Luke 3: 15-22 with reader Kate
Aitchison assisting Rev. Campbell.
The sermon Water and the Spirit,
discussed the importance of water.
It's a source of hydro or power.
People also know it in other forms
such as snow, ice and weather.
Water is used in the sacrament of
baptism. Rev. Campbell referred to
the passage in the Gospel of Luke
where, after John is imprisoned by
Herod, Jesus is baptized along with
other people thus becoming one
blessed by God. This affirms the
covenant between God and man and
thus begins Christ's ministry on
Exeter, Peter and Joanne de Jong of
Cayley, Alberta, Bill and Kim de Jong
of Warren, Rick de Jong and Karen of
Kitchener, Clarence and Sandy de
Jong of Winnipeg and Steven and
Marie de Jong of Kitchener. Mr. de
Jong will be sadly missed by 40
grandchildren and 38 great-
grandchildren. He is also survived by
One sister-in-law Anna de Jong of
Australia and by several nieces and
nephews in the Netherlands and
Australia.
Mr. de Jong was predeceased by
three granddaughters in infancy, three
earth.
Collection was taken by Bill King,
Jeff Cardiff, Maurice Douma and
Doug McArter, then sessions

church to assist Rev. Campbell
leading the congregation in the
sacrament of communion.
Afternoon Bible study will be held
at ;the home of Helen Elliott on
Thursday at 2 p.m.
Saturday, Jan. 17 is Melville
games night at the church. This
promises to be an evening of family
fun. Ladies please bring lunch.
On Jan. 19 the Maitland
Presbyterial annual meeting will be
held in Wingham Presbyterian
Church with the theme, I Will Pour
out my Spirit. You may inform Janna
Dodds if you are able to attend.
A gala celebration for all Scots or
those who wish they were Scots will
be held at Melville on Jan. 24 to
celebrate the birthday of poet
laureate, Bobby Burns. There will be
an excellent menu, followed by
sisters and two brothers.
Friends were received at the Blyth
Visitation Centre of the Falconer
Funeral Homes Ltd., 409 Queen St.,
Blyth on Sunday from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9
p.m. Parish prayers were held Sunday
at 3:30 p.m. Funeral mass was held at
St. Ambrose Roman Catholic Church,
Brussels on Monday, Jan. 5 at II a.m.
Interment will be in St. Ambrose
Cemetery, Brussels. Memorial
donations may be made to the
Seaforth Community Hospital or to
the Wingham Catholic Cluster
(church of your choice).

On Jan. 12, 1867 (137 years ago)
communion service was held in the
first Melville Church situated on the
corner of Turnberry and Queen (now
owned by the Blaneys) and under the
leadership of Rev. Dr. John

members joining the congregation. It
was a very stormy day.
