On Friday, January 16 at 4:30
p.m., churches from Brussels and
the surrounding area are hosting an
event at Brussels Mennonite
Fellowship called, God loves a
picnic!
The name comes from the title of
a song on Bryan Moyer Suderman's
recent CD, God's Love is For
Everybody. Suderman is a musician
and storyteller who leads audiences
of all ages.
"The most rewarding thing," says
Suderman, "is when a child comes
up to me and says 'I like your songs'
and they tell me which is their
favourite.
Or when a parent says 'Our kids
ask for your CD all the time - it's a
good thing we like it as much as
they do!'"
With this kind of response,
Suderman has been increasingly
busy doing performances and
participative concerts in schools and
churches.
The concert and picnic will also
include puppet drama from the
Knox Players, a group of puppeteers
from Knox Presbyterian Church in
Monkton. --
The time to eat is set for 5:30 p.m.
Food is provided.
There is no charge for admission
but donations will be accepted
toward costs.

We Celebrate the Season of Epiphany

Season of Epiphany, a time of seeking
By Joan Golden, Minister at
Brussels/Ethel Pastoral. Charge
1 always appreciate the Season of
Epiphany and the opportunity to
celebrate the "finding" of the Christ
Child by the Magi.
During the Christmas season there
seems to be such a busyness that the
true message of Christmas can get
pushed into the background.
Through preparations for family
gatherings, parties, concerts we can
be so distracted that the Christmas
story of the Christ Child being born
Come

in

into the world can be easily lost:
Once life has settled a little after
the Christmas and New Years
celebrations, we can focus on
Epiphany the seeking of the Christ
Child by the Magi.
In the Gospel of Matthew 2:1-12
the story of Magi following the star
to Bethlehem is told. This story
occurs after the angels, the
shepherds and other curious
individuals have left the family of
Joseph, Mary and the baby -Jesus to
go back to their own routines. The
Magi are aware of the star signifying
a special birth. On their journey as
they get closer, they ask for
directions from Herod.
This story, points out that Herod
was unaware of what this star
signifies. He did not know that the
scriptures foretold of a special Child
to be born. It was only when he
inquired of the chief priests and
scribes and they studied the
scriptures did they realize this child
would be born in Bethlehem.
This story can be for us a reminder
to not forget the Good News of the
Christ Child, not to forget to look to
the scriptures for guidance in our
lives and not to forget God's
promises.
This story also reminds us that the
Christ Child may not be in
surroundings we expect to find Him.
In this story we are told that the
Magi were overwhelmed with joy
when they discovered Him. May we
also feel that joy in the discovering
of Christ in our lives.
This story reminds me of the
continual searching and finding of
Christ in our lives, not that we ever
Family Bible Hour

have lost the knowledge of Christ,
but perhaps the wonder and mystery
of Christ that can be neglected in the
busyness of our lives.
May we continue to be prepared
for the presence of Christ in our
world, even during those 'shadow'
times, times when someone offers
support for difficulties we are not
aware of yet are so grateful for later.
It is then that we realize the light of
Christ is shining in and working
through others.
No matter what age we are, we
carry within each of us the light of
Christ as a gift to others, not the
tangible gifts of the Magi, of gold,
frankincense, or myrrh. We carry the
intangible and priceless gifts of
compassion, love and caring for
others that can be offered any day or
in any season.
Wishing you a blessed Epiphany
full of discoveries.
