Brussels Livestock report
Heavy cattle sell under pressure at sale
Total receipts for Brussels
Livestock for the week ending Jan. 9
were 1,815 head of cattle, 279 lambs
and goats.
On Tuesday the heavy cattle sold
under pressure with the balance of
the fed cattle selling on a fully steady
market. The cows traded on a market
steady to last week. On Thursday the
veal sold under pressure. The lambs
sold on a strong active trade at prices
$5 to $10 higher. On Friday the
calves sold at prices $15 lower with
the yearlings selling under pressure.
There were 474 steers on offer sell-
ing from $78 to $85 with sales to
$100. Osiah Weber, Mount Forest,
consigned one limousin steer weigh-
ing 1,220 lbs. which sold for $100.
His overall offering of twenty-four
steers averaged 1,362 lbs. selling for
an average price of $80.94.
Seventeen steers consigned by
Willard B. Martin, Drayton, averaged
1,474 lbs. selling for an average price
of $81.60 with his top limousin steer
weighing 1,290 lbs. selling to Holly
Park Meat Packers for $92.50.
James Frey, Chesley, consigned

1,423 lbs. selling for an average price

1,421 lbs. selling for an average price
of $79.11 with his top two limousin
steers averaging 1,355 lbs. selling to
Dominion Meat Packers for $86.

Woodstock, consigned one limousin
steer weighing 1,480 lbs. which sold
for $87.50. Their overall offering of
Pamela Scharfe, public health man-
ager with the Huron County health
unit, gave a presentation to the
health and planning committee of
county council on a mandatory
inspection and pump-out program
for septic thanks.
Scharfe noted that all septic sys-
tems have a limited life expectancy
and many current systems are older
than 20 years. In some cases there
are few records of maintenance of
the systems, she said. Improper
maintenance can lead to breakdowns
of the treatment system and endan-
ger the environment.
Priority for a reinspection program
could be on the basis of risk, depend-
ing on the age of the system or on an
area basis such as a watershed pro-
tection strategy, Scharfe said.
Funding for the program could
come from general tax revenue or
through an annual levy on rural
properties that have septic systems.
Scharfe suggested that the program
might lead to property owners being
proactive and replacing their sys-

1,170 lbs. selling to Dominion Meat
Packers for $85. His overall offering
of two heifers averaged 1,150 lbs.

cow consigned by Klaas Steenbeck,
Varna, weighed 1,485 lbs. selling for
$21.50. His overall consignment of
ten holstein cows averaged 1,303 lbs.

There were five bulls on offer sell-

weighed 1,615 lbs. selling to

There were 147 head of veal on
offer. Beef sold $84 to $98 with sales
to $103.50; Holstein, $70 to $80 with
sales to $84; Plain Holstein, $45 to
$60. One limousin veal steer con-
tors available and the amount of
compliance required, Scharfe's pres-
entation said.
