New Year's Eve at the Brussels
Legion Branch saw 40 people
enjoying great music provided by Pat
Maxwell. A potluck meal followed
the midnight balloon drop.
Friday night suppers will resume
this week with baked pork chops on
the menu.
Saturday afternoon was very busy
with both euchre and darts being
played. Upstairs the Huron County
Men's League saw around 50
gentlemen enjoy a good day of fun.
The lucky euchre couple was
Charlie and Millie McDonald who
earned 77 points to take first prize.
Blyth ladies Joann MacDonald and
Dot Carter earned second place with
Huron County experienced
another record in deer collisions
for the year 2003. This year the
total deer collision rate soared to
348 the highest number ever
recorded.
Last year, which was another
record year, the total number
reached 343 five less than -this
year.,
Huron OPP have_ investigated
1.236 deer collisions since 2000._
In that year 315 deer collisions
took place. The numbers dropped
to 240 in 2001.
The breakdown of the year 2003
tOtals show that in January there
were 25; February. nine; March.
21; Ap(il. 31; May, 37; June, 20;
July, 12: August, 13; September,
14; October, 45: November; 75:
December. 37.
Sonic of those collisions
involved more than one deer.
70 points and coming in third were
Jean Bewley and Viola Kirkby with
71 points. The lone hand winners of
free passes to upcoming euchres were
Ed Stewart and Reta Flynn. Off to an
unlucky start this year were Mary
Wallace and Audrey Vath who took
low prize.
About 70 attended the Sunday
night singles dance. They enjoyed the
music of a new band called Awesome
Possum.
We are still looking for people to
join the catering committee for the
Branch. At least two more are needed
to be organizers as well as volunteers
for setting tables, preparations or
doing dishes. There's a dinner on Jan.
21 and another in May at this point.
Several people received minor
injuries while it is suspected that
one women died when she
swerved to avoid a deer on a
sideroad.
In December the most recent
injured party was a pregnant
woman in the South Huron area
who struck the deer and ended up
in the ditch.
. The greatest risk of deer
collisions is in the fall when deer
are rutting and starting Jo herd for
the upcoming winter. Most of the
collisions are at the dusk hours in
the early evening or morning
hours with some reported during
the night and through the daylight
hours.
This year five days into January
OPP have already recorded five
deer collisions.
Police continue to warn
motorists to he on the alert.
We would appreciate hearing from
men, women, couples who could help
• out occasionally.
Sign-up sheets for euchre need to
be entered this week for the Zone
event.
A grace period until Jan. 31 is
granted for comrades to pay their
membership fees before they are not a
member in good standing. Past due
notices will be sent with the January
newsletter.
.Thursday night darts resume this
week.
