Businesses in the Municipality of
Huron East are spreading the word.
Clusters of retailers and service
providers in both Brussels and
Seaforth have created networks in
order to exchange .business referrals,
learn about each other's businesses
and discuss marketing issues. In
weekly meetings over coffee, they
share information on new product
lines, staffing, sales and other tidbits
from their businesses. Each business
representative has the floor for one
minute to promote his/her business,
in the hopes that others will pass on
information to their customers.
In addition, at each meeting, one
business does a 10-minute
presentation on its features, products
and services so that others
understand the full range of its value
to clients and customers. Time is
reserved for referrals from business
to business, and a tray of business
cards is available for participants.
This 'word-of-mouth marketing' is
very effective, and has already
resulted in sales from referrals by
businesses to businesses.
"If you want clients by way of
referrals, you have to give referrals
Jean Bewley read the scripture
which was taken from Luke 2: 8-14..
The Message of Christmas was
read by Jeanne Ireland, Eluned
McNair and Isabel Gibson. 0 Little
Town ,o Bethlehem was sung and the
roll call was answered with each
member giving a Christmas reading.
The minutes of the November
meeting were read and approved and
the correspondence was read. Jeanne
Kirkby read the treasurer's report
and the collection was taken:
to others," said Ralph Laviolette,
business growth and economic
development office, Huron East.
"Successful networking like this
means that you are part of a sales
team for other businesses and they
become part of your sales team."
The networking groups have been
facilitated by the municipality's
business growth and economic
development office with the goal of
strengthening the downtown cores,
and bringing people back to the area
to shop, to work and to live.
The Brussels Networking Group
meets Thursdays at 12:15 p.m. at
Ontario's Finest Inns office, 435
Turnberry St., while the Seaforth
Networking Group meets Tuesdays
at 8 a.m. in the Post Office building.
Any business group in Huron East
interested in starting a networking
group is invited to contact the
Business Growth and . Economic
Development Office at 519-527-
0305 Seaforth or 519-887-8813
Brussels. The office will be pleased
to provide a venue for the meetings.
Another initiative of the Business
Growth and Economic Development
Office is the launch of the Huron
East Chamber of Commerce. The
The New Year's Day Levee to be
held in the church was discussed.
' The next meeting will be a potluck
supper on Jan. 20 with Eluned
McNair and Alice Marks in charge
of the devotions.
Cathrine Campbell closed the
meeting with prayer and everyone
sang We Wish You a Merry
Christmas.
The gift exchange was enjoyed by
all and a lunch was served by the
hostess.
Chamber — open to all farm
businesses, manufacturing, retail and
other businesses in the municipality
— will represent businesses on a
broader scale.
The collective of businesses will
mount events, organize shows and
arrange guest speakers for business
development. It will also encourage
other businesses to locate in the
municipality, and its members will
reap the benefits of joint advertising,
group buying power and promotion
opportunities.
The Chamber is slowly taking
shape. The first organizing meeting
will be at a reception on Wednesday,
Jan. 28, from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at
the Huron Business Centre,
Seaforth. Bylaws will be reviewed
and the inaugural board of directors
will be chosen. All interested firms
and individuals are welcome.
An associate status will be
available to any firms or individuals
outside the Huron East area who are
interested in joining the group.
For more information on these
initiatives, contact Laviolette,
519-527-0305 Seaforth, 519-887-
