Musical prelude begins service at Melville Church
Greeting at the door for the
Sunday morning service at Melville
Presbyterian Church were Jim and
Dona Knight. The musical prelude
was played by organist Crystal
McLellan and Rev. Cathrine
Campbell led the service.
The children's story was of the
three Magi who journeyed on camel
from Persia. now Iran, to investigate
the meaning of the star shining so
brightly. "Just like these Magi, if I
want to be really wise, I will leave
my comfortable place and look for
Jesus". said Rev. Campbell, "and He
may be found in many places".
The responsive reading was Psalm
147: 12 - 20, and the scripture
lesson, was Jeremiah 31: 7 - 14;
Ephesians I: 3 - 14; John 1: 1 - 18.
Graham Work assisted Rev.
Campbell as reader.
In the sermon, What Happens
Now? Rev. Campbell talked of the
power outage last summer. Many
people, fearing the same thing again-,
buy generators and stock up on
supplies to be prepared. In the news
of Christmas people have heard of a
light more powerful than hydro, the
light of Christ's presence in the
world as the Gospel of John tells us
of the light shining in the darkness.
And from the fulfillment of
Jeremiah's prophecy, they realize
that God does keep his promises, she
said.
Referring to the early Presbyterian
settlers in Brussels, Rev. Campbell
stated, "Those early folks didn't just
put up a building and say, that's it.
They wanted a sanctuary to praise
God in for all of their lives. And we
have such a gift because the light .is
there".
Thirty-four family members held a
Jardin family gathering on Sunday,
Dec. 28 in the Women's Institute
Hall, Belgrave. Harold and Nancy
Jardin were the hosts.
Guests attended from Kitchener-
Waterloo, New Hamburg,
Etobicoke, Mississauga, British
Columbia, Switzerland, Blyth and
Belgrave.
Bonnie Garner asked the blessing
and a buffet meal followed. After the
meal Don Jardin played the piano
for carols and families participated
in readings, poems and singing. The
lucky chair winners were Ruth
Jardin and Kesler Jardin. Santa
Claus visited to delight everyone
with a gift.
To close out a happy day Debbie
Jardin and Sarah Cowan helped the
children make a take-home craft.

Murray and Betty Cardiff and
Leanne Armstrong and the Melville
Guild organized a very successful
Levee that was the kickoff to the
150th anniversary celebration this
year. Events will be held throughout
the year, and the whole community
is welcome to help observe this
occasion.
Church historian, Gerald Gibson,
is writing Melville Moments each
week so. that all may get into the
spirit of the celebration. Here is the
first instalment:
One hundred and fifty years ago
Presbyterianism in this community
had its beginning. For a few years
services were held in private homes
and, during the summer, in the hush.
From the first there were two well-
to-do and prosperous congregations.
namely Knox and Melville.
About 1856 the Knox members
got together and agreed upon the
erection of a place of worship. The
church was built on the corner of •
John and Ellen Streets (now the
home of George Langlois) and was
23 feet by .40 feet in size. This was
the first Presbyterian Church in the
district and the first church in
Ainleyville, now called Brussels.
For a number of years the services
were conducted by probationers and
students until the first' minister was
appointed in 1861. In 1865 the old
church was replaced by a new one,
4(1 feet by. 60 feet.
During-their 39 years as a separate
congregation, Knox had four
ministers,- who in the near future can
be seen at the back of the Church.
Knox was a separate congregation
until amalgamation with Melville in
1895.
