Snorts Crusaders lose to Wildcats The Blyth PeeWee Black Buzzards broomball team took on Palmerston Saturday at the Blyth arena. Blyth came out strong on the first shift, working the ball deep into Palmerston 's end. Kristin VanGaalan passed to Brent Drost who fired the ball into net for the first goal. The tans were treated to lots of end-to-end action. Blyth's goalie, Courtney Bos had a strong performance in net, keeping Palmerston oft* the scoreboard. It was a 10-5 loss for the Brussels Tykes when they hosted BCH 1 Dec. 27. • Anthony Vader. scored his first of the season to put Brussels on the scoreboard. Sarah Dillon picked up the assist. BCH took a 3-1 lead into the second, then scored three more, but some solid play by the hosts kept them in the game. Brock McLean Brussels Curling Club was informed that it took first prize at the Santa Claus Parade. Organizers of the entry were Gary Pipe, Nora Stephenson, Mike Alexander (tractor and wagon) and Paul Elliott lgarage).. -Winners of the Brussels Curling Club's November and December draw were: first. Steve Steiss, 43 In the second period Drost struck again. After breaking up the play at the red line, he raced in on a breakaway and put the ball deep in the net. On his next shift, Drost picked the ball up out of a scramble after a faceoff in Blyth's end. _ He slipped by two defense players into open ice for a breakaway on the Palmerston net, and made no mistakes putting the ball past the goalie. The win puts the Buzzards' record at two and two. with two, one unassisted, and Mitchell Kellington kept the point- spread at two. Matt McNichol, Kellington and Colton Hastings were credited with assists. The wheels came off in the third, however, with BCH bulging the twine . four more times, while holding their hosts to one. Brody TenPas got the goal for Brussels, assisted by Kellington. points; Murray Pepper,' Leanne Konarski, Jason Konarski; se- cond, John Dorsch, 42 points, Pauline Patterson, Marten Thomet, Shane _ Gibstin; third. The Brussels Crusaders travelled to Moukton on Friday night to play the Wildcats. Tyler Armstrong would open the scoring with help from Ryan Muirhead as the visiting team got off to a good start halfway through the first period. Monkton would tie it early in the second before Tyler Stewart would regain the lead for Brussels with help from Derek Cherrey and Brian McNichol. Monkton would tie it at two apiece late in the second and this would set the stage for a dramatic finish. Monkton made it 3-2 in the early part of the third, then jumped up by two with roughly five minutes remaining in regulation, Brussels clawed back to make it 4- 3 as Chad McCallum scored the goal with help from Cherrey and Clint Fischer. However this would be the final score in what proved to be a hard loss to swallow. Pre--Tykes as they played in Listowel on Saturday, Jan. 3. Andrew Patton scored the. first goal unassisted at four minutes into the first period. Kai Heimstra scored right after him, then Patton scored his second goal at the 10-minute mark., Tim Waechter scored his first goal of the game with six minutes left on the clock. _ Faith Sebastian tried to score her first goal, but Listowel took the puck to score -against goalie Scott Dolmage. With only six seconds left in the first period, Lexi Smith scored. her first of the game, assisted by Waechter. Heimstra scored two more goals early in the second period, then Waechter scored two. unassisted. He was then assisted by Smith for- two more goals. Listowel took the puck at the end of the second period to score their second of the game. -In the third period, it was a clean sweep for Brussels, with Waechter scoring three; Smith, two; Heimstra, two and Patton, one.- Waechter picked up two assists, and Smith picked up one asMst in the third. The final score was 18-2 for Brussels. The next game is in. Brussels on Saturday night the team hosted the Lucknow Lancers and the Lancers showed the Crusaders why they are near the top of the league using speed and skill enmute to a 6-2 victory. The Brussels goals were-scored by Fischer and Mark Wilson. Assists were earned by Stewart and Dave Lewington. The team travels to Shelburne on Saturday night and to Mildmay . on Sunday afternoon in two pivotal games as the Crusaders jockey for playoff position. Earlier the Brussels Crusaders lost to the Wingham Spitfires Dec. 23 in the team's last action before the Christmas break. Brussels scored two powerplay goals in the first 12 minutes of the opening period. Both goals were scored by Mike Bromley and assisted by Mike Haggitt. Muirhead earned an assist on the second one. Wingham would make it 3-2 by game. Unfortunately, Listowel managed one more in the final minutes to claim the 5-4 victory. It was another hattrick for McClinchey Jan. 2 when the squad upset a visiting Elma-Logan team. While the visitors took a quick 2- 0 lead, McClinchey, with an assist from Campbell brought them within one before the end of the first period. Darcey Cook and Robbie Semple set up the play for Campiiell in the second to tie it, then Bernard, with assists -going to Cook and Cory Chapman gave Brussels a one-point lead. McClinchey scored seconds later and the team took a 4-2 lead into the third period. Andrew McDonald picked up the assist on the McClinchey goal. Monkton. the end of the second. There would be no" more scoring from that point on with both teams having many chances to do so. - During the intermission of the senior game the Wingham Novices and Brussels Novices played. Wingham led after the first half 1-0 and scored four more goals in the second half for a 5-0 win. At the WOAA Senior All-Star game in Tavistock the Crusaders were to be represented by Bromley and Brett Fischer. However. Fischer. sustained an injury and Muirhead took his place. Bromley scored a goal and earned two assists in the contest playing with Travis McKeag and P.J. Slade of the Ripley Wolves. Muirhead played defense with Brad Hayter of the Wingham Spitfires until a skate problem .derailed him and he was forced to exit. The South team, of which both players were a part won 16-5. Continuing to thwart Elma-Logan, Brussels added to their lead after the break. Tate Stephenson took his turn lighting the light, with an assist from Chapman. Then Mitch Blake set up McClinchey up for the hattrick to end the game at 6-2. Blyth Bantams win 4-3 Blyth Bantam Bulldogs played one exhibition game during the Christmas break, on Monday, Dec. 29 against Seaforth. The final score was 4-3 for Blyth. Scoring for Blyth were Blake Hesselwood, Curtis Robertson and Johnathon McDowell. Assists went to Lee Watkins, two, Trevor McArter, two and Curtis Robertson. Scoring for Seaforth were Alex Murray, James McColl and Chad VanDyk. Steiss rink wins draw Blyth Novices tie Zurich The Blyth Novices travelled to scored the second goal. Chloe 13ayfield arena Jan. 4 to play Zurich. Middegaal and Caroline McDowell The result was a 2-2 tie. helped out with assists. The Bulldogs came out playing Drew Wood played net working. hard. Nathan Plunkett scored the very hard keeping out many of first two goals, and Alex Peters Zurich's shots. - In an outstanding display Brussels Midget Matt McClinchey notched six goals in two games in recent hockey action. On Dec. 23 the squad lost a close one in Listowel. After the hosts scored two, McClinchey responded quickly bringing his team within one. Assisting were Chris Bernard and Steve Ropp. McClinchey, with help from Nick Campbell and Pat Rushton scored again mid-way through the middle period, only, to see it cancelled seconds later. Listowel then widened the margin with two minutes to go`- before the buzzer. Campbell skated in for a goal of his own to begin the third period. then with .his hattrick McClinchey, with help from Bernard, tied the Brussels Pre- Tykes Tykes lose to BCH trounce Listowel It was another win for the Brussels Saturday, Jan. 10 at 9 a.m. against McClinchey scores 6 in 2 games
