Provincial spending cutbacks
mean the Maitland Valley Conser-
vation Authority faces major bud-
get cuts in 1976, authority mem-
bers learned last week.
Marlene Shiell, authority secret-
ary-treasurer, said the province has
ordered conservation authorities to
, stash capital projects for next year
to 7S per cent of the amount spent
this year, while administrative
; most be kept to a two to five
per cent increhse over 1975 levels.
She told the authority's year-end
meeting here the Maitland author-
ity's proposed 1976 budget calling
for'expenditures of about 5660,000
will have to be redrafted following
word of the spending restraints..
The authi • 's 1975 budget
showed expenditures of nearly
S400,000,
Authority' members learned the
bad news about provincial finormg
at a meeting with the London office
of the conservation auth
branch of the in trti;o Nlinistry of
Natural Resources.
Mrs. Shiell said the authority
won't learn until early next year
what • its actual allonnent of
provinciallimds will be "but we'll
have to sit down and revise what
we've done."
Ptovinciat officials' told authority
representatives that S9 million in
spending planned by conservation
authorities in Southwestern Ontar-
io) will have to be cut to about 1105
she said.
The Maitland Authority can
expect to receive about 595,000 for
administra. tion in 1976 compared to
a budgeted amount of S130',000,
she said.
The remaining $530.000 of
projected expendhures will likely
be slashed by about half to meet
the provincial guiderme, with major
cuts expected in the 'proposed
S1t30.000, hind acquisition program.
"This is, .a budget we worked
on hard and long." authority
chairman Sack Grant. of Gads Bill
commented.. "It boas like we'll, get
a whole lot of nothing.'
Land acquisition figures promin-
entiv in the authority's plans.
