Dear Editor, The United Nations has desig- nated December 10 as Human Rights Day. r For its 1973 commemoration, this organization launched a Decade for Action to Combat Racism and Racial Dis- crimination whose basic goals include the' promotion of human rights and fundamental freedoms for all, regardless of race, colour, ethnic origin or sex. And since the United Nations has appointed 1975 as International Year for WOmen, I would like to pursue this subject along that line. As a local member of the Baha'i ' Faith, which works to promote the efforts of the United Nations in its attempts to insure universal human rights, I believe that each one of us should make a special effort to understand exactly what equality of the sexes means. . Baha'u'sllah, Prophet 7 founder of the Baha'i Faith, pointed out over a century ago that the world 'in the past has :-Peen ruled by men due to their more forceful and aggressive quali- ties of body and mind, but that the tide is already turning, and will continue to turn, toward the necessity of attributes such as mental, alertness, intuition' and the spiritual qualities, of love and service which are strong points of women. In this way the future will be. "an age less masculine and more permeated with the feminine ideals, or, to 'speak more exactly, will be 'an age in which the masculine and feminine elements of civilization will be more properly balanced". Moreover, "as long as women are prevented from attain- ing their highest possibilities, so long will men be unable to achieve the greatness which ,might be theirs". Education of women is an important factor in the establish- ment of equality of the sexes in that the mother IS the first educator of humanity. The . Baha'i writings state: "If she be defective, and imperfect herself , the, child will necessarily be deficient; therefore imperfection of woman implies a condition of imperfection in all mankind, .for it is the mother who rears, nurtures and guide's the growth of the child". Although both parents share in the overall responsibility of instructing the children, the onus of child educa- tion is placed primarily Upon the woman due to her physical and spiritual attunement with the soul of-the 'child she has borne. Because of woman's superiority to man as regards the Motherly qualities of tenderness of heart and abundance of mercy and sympathy, the contribution of women to' world peace will be of inestimable worth; for what woman would want to see her son go off to fight a war?. The Baha.'i writings elucidates this idea ' further: "In past ages humanity has been defective and, inefficient because incomplete. War and its ravages haVe blighted the world. The education of woman will be a WEDNESDAY, DECEMBI USED CARS A number of 75's,in Pontiacs, Chev Impalas, Pontiac`Le Mans, Buick Century and Monte Carlos 1974 FORD Galaxie, 2 door hardtop 1974 PONTIAC Parisienne Brougham, 4 door hardtop 2 —1974 MAVERICKS 1973 FORD Custom 500, 2 door hardtop 1973 OLDSMOBILE, Delta Royale, air conditioning 1973 PONTIAC Catalina, 4 door hardtop 1973 CHEV Impala 1972 MERCURY MARQUIS, 2' door hardtop 1972 CHEV Impala, 4 door hardtop 1971 CHEV 'Impala, 4 door hardtop 1970 CHEV Impala 4 door hardtop 1970 PONTIAC, 2 door hardtop 1970 DODGE Monaco, 4 door hardtop 1970 CHEV Bel Air 10(--- 1965 - 1968 Models 2 — 1974 FORD Stationwagons 1973 FORD Grand Torino stationwagon, air conditioned 1973 CHEV 1/2 ton pickup 1973 CHEV 3/4 ton pickup 1973 CHEV 6500 series with 18' van, power tail gate loader 1973 CHEAT 60 series, 18' stake, power tail gate loader 1970 CHEV 50 series with 16' van 1970 G.M.C. 60 series with 16' refrigerated van 1969 CHEV 50 series with 16' stake • A number of vans from 1970 - 1972. Assuredly woman will abolish warfare among mankind.." In conclusion then the role of women is ultiniately important, not only to the welfare of the family unit, but also to the welfare of the entire human race. Their full contribution toward the establish- ment of a world civilization is imminent. Baha'is believe, be- cauSe of the spiritual power released in this age of Baha'u711ah, who has erased all limitations preventing the fulfillment of hum- an •potentialities. • : I would like to thank you Mr. 'Editor for allowing me the oppor- tunity to point out the urgent need for our deep consideration of human rights on this Human Rights Day. 1975.
