Huron. County Council has grant-
ed salary increases of 11 per cent to
its top administrative staff and in a
close vote almost refused to accept
pay increases for councillors.
County administrator Bill Hanly
told council that federal wage
guidelines were not felt to apply to
the county because council approv-,
ed 11 percent increases October 3 -
10 days • before the federal 10
percent limit was announced.
He noted the new wages might
still be subject to approvalfrom the
federal anti-inflation review board
"but as far as we understand it; we
are all right."
Warden Anson McKinley said
that in addition to the 11 percent
raises, special increases were made
to keep wages at levels comparable
to those in other counties.
"To be honest, most of •our
department heads were on the low
side," he said , of the comparison..
, Under the new salary schedules,
the following salaries will be paid
in 1976: clerk-treasurer Bill. Han-
ley, $25,500; deputy clerk-treasur-
er Bill Alcock, $21,090; medical
officer of health Dr. Frdnk Mills,
$35,520; county engineer Jim.
Britnell; $31,500; planning director
Gary. Davidson, $22,200; Huron-
view administrator Chester Archi-
bald, $20,000; social services
administrator John MacKinnon,
$16,500; Huron County museum
curator Ray Scotchmer, $14,000;
development officer Spence Cum-
mings. $15,600; librarian Bill
Partridge, $17,000..
Cotincillors nearly forsook a pay
increase to help the county fight
inflation.
Reeve Derry Boyle of Exeter said,
council should reject any increase
"because we should set an
example, as elected people, to our
employees and taxpayers."
In a recorded vote, however,
council voted 32 to 24 in favor (4
accepting a 10 percent increase.
Councillors will now receive $44
for full-day meetings and $27.50 for
half-day meetings.
In other business, council decid-
ed to grant $9,000 in 1975 and the
same amount in '1976 to the. South.
