Some faits
about
Cystic Fibrosis
Cystic Fibrosis (or C - F) is
one of the most common "serious
chronic disorders of Canadian
infants and children.
* ONE. IN. EVERY 1,000
CHILDREN is, born with
Cystic Fibrosis. ,
C - F claims more, victims
than Polio ever did at its
pre-vaccine worst.
C - F hits children in the
LUNGS and in the DIG-
ESTIVE SYSTEM. In the
lungs,' thick gluey mucus
clings to the inner walls
reducing the oxygen sup-
ply. In, the stomach, faulty-
digestive juices cannot ex-
tract the nutrition from
the food consumed.
* Ten, years ago, most C - F
c.hildren died before reach-
ing school age. Today,
with early diagnosis and
expert treatment, many
affected youngsters stand
a good chance of living be-
yond their, teens.
Treatment includes: diet
supplements; mist. tents;
"postural drainage" ther-
apy; breathing exercises;
" and specific medications
to combat infection.
* For most families, C - F
is' a STAGGERING. EC-
ONOMIC DRAIN. The
outlay for drugs and
equipment may run to
$2,000 a yeti.
* The Canadian C - F
foundation has established
18 C - F Centres and Clin-
ics across. Canada for
treatment, research and
teaching.
