Huron Board
Defers Issue Of
Driver Wages
Increases in mileage rates and
bus driver salaries were deferred
for further study last week by the
Huron County Board of Education.'
Both issues were sent to' the
board's management, committee to
see if the increases are justifiable
and allowable, considering recent-
ly imposed federal wage. guidelin-
es.
_In committee of the whole,
trustees deeided to have the
management committee. look at
salary increases offered to its
operators of board-owned buses
and for bus contractors.'
Director 'of education John
Cochrane refused to publiely dis-
close' what the increases were.
They were arrived at by the drivers.
and the board's negotiating com-
mittee.
Under a one-year contract. which
expired September' 30, contractors
- who operated 120 of the buses -.
earned $6,878 annually for a
90-seat bus, or $4,408 for an
18-seat bus.
Trustees' also turned back for
further study a recommendation
that mileage ,rates for . boaid
members and. employees using
their own vehicle,.. be increased
frorn 15 cents to 18 cents per mile.
A report from the chairman's
advisory committee recommended
the new rate because gasoline,
prices have increased twice since
last year arid are expected to rise
again this month. -
The proposal was opposed by
trustee John Elliot of Blyth who
said gasoline priceg in his area
have remained constant since he
became a trustee last year.
"This is not the time to increase
our rates;" he said,, referring to
general wage restraints.
Mt. Cochrane • 'replied that the
board has followed the practice
since 1969 of 'paying the same rate
as paid to provincial employees
who now receive 19 cents a gallon
for the first 5,000 miles and 16
cents for the next 5,000 miles,
"That produces an average of
17V2 cents a mile over 10,000
miles," he said.'
Trustee John Westbrook of
Clinton said Huron County employ-
ees receive either 17 cents a mile or
a lump sum Of $60 annually.
