_Murray Gaunt, member' of the
proYincial government for Huron-
Bruce riding, announced Monday
that he would not seek the
leadership of the provincial Liberal,
party made vacant with the
resignation of Robert Nixon.
Speculation as to Mr. Gaunt's
intention has been publicized in
recent weeks and he announced
last week that a statement would be:
forthcoming the first of this week,
Mr. Gaunt's statement was;
"I have decided not to seek the
leadership of the Liberal Party for
two reasons, the most important of
which is the fact that my family is
young and I am not prepared to
subject them to. the extra pressures
and responSibilities attendant with
such an undertaking.
"Secondly, the party did extre-
mely Well • in • Western Ontario,
made major breakthroughs in
Eastern Ontario and held in the
Graduate

official opening of the new
$600,000 Ripley-Huron District
Recreation Complex.
chairman for the evening was
Bob Emerson who, in his opening
remarks, mentioned the fact 'that
the opening of the building was, the
culmination of almost three years
of planning, hard work and loyal
support by many people. He said
the project had its frustrations, but
that it was well worth it. "He
expressed the appreciation :that
• Jack and Mary MacDonald had
made the property available to
purchase keeping in mind that all
recreation facilities should be tied
together with room for future
expansion.
The program commenced about
8 p.m.. with the singing of 0
Canada, with piano accompani-
ment by Ann• Ferguson.
Mr. EmersOn stated that the plan
was to originally build the facility
for about $300,000, but with delays
and inflation', the final cost was
almost twice this amount.
The original fund raising vial by
public donation and community
fund raising events was S100,000,
but this was later stretched to
about $162,500. To date, $156,000
has been raised by public canvass
and fund raising events. This
announcement drew applause, from
the audience.
$110,000 of the outstanding
amount has been put on debenture
to be raised through taxation.
$150,000 was received from ,the
Provincial community centre grant
and $25,000 from the agricultural

Grants for senior citizens from the
Federal Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Cliff Emmerton of Huron Town-
ship has been named manager of
the new Ripley-Huron Recreation
Cbmplex.
To ease the,financial pressure on
the two communities for, the
upcoming winter season, created
by the new building and facilities,
three Ripley men, Ken MacDonald,
John D. MacKay and Allan Irwin
have volunteered their services as
ice makers for the coming season,
'free of charge..
The councils of Huron and Ripley
purchased an ice making .machine,
in lieu of wages for the coming
year.' This will be in effect for one
year when the complex manager
will then assume fall duties of ice
making, as well.

impressive wins with his Purebred.

At the Walkerton "Little Royal"
George had eight firsts including
the grand champion bull, grand
champion female and group of four
bred by exhibitor. There were three
herds competing.
At Teeswater Fair,' at the
Western Ontario Zone Show,
covering Huron,, Bruce, Perth,,
Grey and part of Wellington
.Counties, he won the Ontario
banner for the champion bull. He
had first for •cow and calf, second
for May bull, second for January
bull, first and third for two-year-old
heifer and first for group of four
bred by exhibitor.
Raise $91 3 In
Recent Campaign
The Lucknow Branch of the
Arthritis and Rheumatism Society,
is happy to report that $913.80 was
raised through the canvass.
The, Branch was pleased to have
had Kairshea, St. 'Helens and
Dungannon Women's Institute and
Holyrood Community,. assist Luck-
now individuals in this canvass.
Government grants program de-
signed to encourage retired people
to undertake worthwhile projects
which would be of benefit to them
and their communities. Since its
introduction in 1972, a total of
4,614 projects have been funded for
$26,400,003. In all, 861,400 retired
Canadians are involved.

"It seems to me that the party is
in the best position in 32 years to
move forward and provide effective
and constructive opposition and
ultimately to assume the responsib-
ility of goyernment.
"I know there will be a number
of outstanding candidates coming
forward in the weeks ahead and I
look forward to working under the
new leadership as effectively as 1
can to do my -small part in making
this province a ' better place in
which to live."
Mr. Gaunt has had a successful
political career winning five
straight elections, the most recent
one by a Majority of 10,393.
