Bruce Farm Report
CEREAL AND FORAGE INSECT
AND DISEASE REPORT
ERGOT
This fungus disease is seldom
mentioned because its incidence
is very low most years. How-
ever, this year it is of consider-
able',concern in barley and to a
lesser extent in rye. Most infect-
ions have occurred in barley in
Lambton County and in a few
:fields in the surrounding counties
of Huron, Kent and Middlesex. Al-
so, ergot is 'known to be present
in at least one field' of barley and
several fields of rye in Durham
County.
Ergot contains a toxic chemical
which is potentially harmful to
livestock. It can cause abortion,
nervous disorders and reduction
in milk production. Ergoty grain
should not be fed to pregnant,
lactating or very young livestock.
Feed that contains more than 0.1
percent (12 ergot bodies per quart
of seed) is considered dangerous.
• Saleability of ergoty barley or
rye is a problem at the moment.
Apparently feed mills that are
not equipped to clean out' ergot
will not purchase the grain. Some
mills that are equipped have ad-
vised farmers to bring in the grain
at a later date when they have
time to clean same. Grain that
will remain on the farm should
be put through ,a fine screen be-
fore being fed. If cleaned and
then diluted with other grain ergot
should not present a feeding,
problem.
The amount of ergot that is be-
ing found ,varies considerably.
Most of the grain is within the
feeding tolerance.
Ergot is easily identified. Dark
bodies are found in the heads of
grain displacing individual ker-
nels. Ergot bodies can be as' small
as a kernel or two to three times
as large. These fungal bodies may
fall to the ground and sporulate
next year or be taken 'off with
the grain. Tightly adjusted cy-
linders and dampness can crack
the ergot bodies during harvest.
While ergot is usually associa-
ted with rye only, it can occur in
wheat, barley and oats but very
seldom in the latter crop, there-
fore oats could be used in a ro-
tation along with corn, beans and
other non-host crops. Ergot in-
fects quackgrass and other weeds,
thus the possibility of infection al-
ways exists. It appears that this
year the right temperature and
humidity conditions for • sporu-
lation occurred at flowering time
to cause a relatively high inci-
dence of infection in some loc-
alities.
MORE THAN AGRICULTURE
Within the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food, 'there are -
a number of different branches,
one of which is the Home Ec-
onomics Branch. Many do not rea-
lize this Branch exists .and there-
fore fail to take advantage of
the services we offer.
