Whitechurch services on Sunday' at
11 a.m.; where Reverend Dr. W.
Stanford Reid, Professor of Hist-
ory, University of Guelph had
charge of the service. -Dr. Reid was
in the' pastorate in Montreal
followed by professional duties at
McGill University and lately at
Guelph University.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill= Gibson and
family spent the week end with Mr.
and Mrs. Arnold Lougheed and
family at Niagara Falls.

Mrs. Isabelle. Martyn, who has
been staying with Mr. and Mrs.
Ewan. MacLean since her return
from hospital in London, was able
to return to her - own- home in .
Ripley, during the past week,
Visiting Mr, and Mrt. Oliver
McCharles during the past week
were Mr. and Mrs. Len Evans of
Sarnia and Mr. Fred Ritchie of
Huntsville.
Mr. and Mrs. Tom MacDonald
and young son have been visiting
with Mr. and Mrs. Finlay MacDon-
ald. Tom has been employed in the
Western part' of Canada for the
past few years and it is his first visit
home in some time.
David MacDonald has been
enjoying a holiday in the Province
of Quebec.

A ' shower for Miss Jackie
Collinson bride-to-be was held on
Thursday evening in the basement
of Ashfield Presbyterian Church,
while upstairs a reheirsal for the
wedding of Donna Wylds and John
Zimmerman was taking place. The,
wedding was Friday evening.

A shower for. Mr. and Mrs. Tom
MacDonald was held at the home of
Tom's aunt, Mrs. Alex Andrew on
Saturday, when about 50 relatives
of Tom's gathered to meet the
young couple.
Mrs. Gordon Finlayson has been
a patient in 'Hospital in London
following surgery.
Miss Doris Wylds of- Toronto
visited with Mr. Dan Wylds and
attended the Zimmerman-Wylds
wedding on Friday evening in
Ashfield Presbyterian Church. Mr.
an d Mrs. John Zimmerman left to
spend their honeymoon amid
showers of good wishes in the
-Bahamas.

Institute Mark
70th Anniversary
The 70th anniversary of St.
Helens Women's Institute was the
theme' for the October meeting.
Over 50 members, former mem-
bers and, friends attended. A large
decorated' cake, • lighted candles
and'flower arrangements Ave the
hall the celebrating air.
President, Mrs. Peter Chandler,
opened the meeting with a. Cordial
Welcome to all followed by the
Mary Stewart Collect and Institute
Ode. The roll call "Bring a Friend
and Introduce Her" took place.
Minutes of the August Meeting and
the September one, which was in
the form of a bus• trip to Kleinberg,
were read. Business was dealt
with. Mrs. Peter Chandler. and
Mrs. James Aitchison were to
attend the Fall Rally at' Belgrave
Monday, October 6. Mrs. Peter
Chandler was to attend the
Conference at St. Tliiihlas October
15 and 16. Mrs. Harold Gaunt and
Mrs. Gordon Struthers volunteered
to attend the short course in
Wingham on October 23 and 24
"Salute to Vegetables". The
Remembrance Day Service will be
held in. the, hall on Sunday,
November 9 at .2 p.m. Card parties
will be starting Thursday, Novem-
ber 6 at 8.30 p.m. for the fall and
winter season. -
Mrs. Russell Phillips presided
for the program. All former
members were asked to stand and
each gave a little comment. Mrs.
Bruce Raynard presided 'at the
piano while we sang "The More
We Get Together" and "Grand-
father's Clock"- Mrs. Chris' Cook
gave a humorous reading, "My
Elastic Entrapment". Mrs. Gord-
on MacPherson introduced Mrs.
George Kennedy who spoke on the
Canary Islands and showed many
interesting' pictures. These were
really enjoyed as Mrs. Kennedy
Those on' the Walkathon from
Whitechurch were Tammy and Lisa
Stone, Janet Laidlaw, Clara Milli-
gan, Dawn Adams, Vicki Scott,
Debbie Hickey and Donna Thom-
son.
The weather on Saturday being a
lovely balmy sunshine fall day a
large crowd gathered at the home-
of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Purdon for
the sale .of farm stock, implements
and Miscellaneous articles- -on
wagons as well' as some household
furniture. The bidding was brisk
and the big sale was over by 6
o'clock. Whitechurch Ladies', Aid
had a booth which was well
patronized.
Mr. and Mrs. Don Dirstein and
family of Ajax spent the week end
with her parents Mr. and Mrs.
Russel =Gaunt and attended the
Purdon sale on Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. Donald Gaunt of
Chatham spent the week end with
her parents Mr. and Mrs. Wm.
told about differept experiences in
her ,hurnorous way. Miss Isabel'
Miller gave her an appreciation
gift. Mrs. Frank "McQuillin gave a
reading "The Women's Institute'',
from thelate Miss Dean MacLeod's
book. A list of the presidents and
secretaries for the past 70 years
was prepared by Mrs. E. W. Rice
and read by Mrs. Peter Chandler.
• Mrs. Ed Thom, who has joined
the "Over Ninety Club", cut the
cake. We were sorry no one,
remembered a camera for she was
a' highly esteemed resident of St.
Helens for many years. A chatty
social time followed and. each
enjoyed anniversary cake for des-
sert. -
Mrs. James Aitchison moved a
vote of thanks to the committee
who had Prinned , such a pleasant
evening and thanked all former
members and friends for joining us
to celebrate the 70th anniversary.
