Lucknow Women's Institute held
their October meeting in the
assembly room in the Town Hall on
Monday evening, October 6th as a
dessert meeting. The committee in
charge of Education and Cultural
Activities were Mrs. Gordon Fish-
er, Miss Elizabeth Robinson, Mrs.
Philip Stewart and Mrs. Evelyn
Barkwell. The room was tastefully
decorated ?with ,flowers in the
Thanksgiving theme.
Mrs. Armstrong Wilson, presid-
ent, welcomed all and the meeting
was opened with the Ode and Mary
Stewart Collect. Mrs. Bert
Gammie, secretary-treasurer, gave
the correspondence and treasurer's
report. There were 28 present
naming "a craft when I was a
child".
Mrs. Ted Rice and Mrs. Jim
McNaughton were appointed dele-
gates to the Bruce County. Rally to
be held in the Whitechurch
Community' Hall on' Thursday,
October 16, registration at .9 a.m.
The 'Area Convention is to be held
in Westside United Church, Owen
Sound, on.. Monday and Tuesday,
November 3 and 4, delegate Mrs.
Marshall Gibson with Mrs. GraCe
Cainpbell alternate.. Miss Eliza.-
beth Robinson offered to provide
something fot the craft table.
Mrs. Wilson thanked all who had
helped 'at the Brook's wedding, It
was decided that the Institute
would make the Christinas pud-
dings again, this year. Mrs. Jim
McNaughton gave the cheerio
report.
Miss Elizabeth Robinson was
chairlady for the program . and
welcomed Mrs. George Kennedy,
who had 'enjoyed a trip to the
Canary Islailds and Spain last
NoYember, and gave a good
commentary and showed slides.
There are seven 'islands in _the
Canary Island group and are of
volcanic formation. They were
once a part of Africa. The weather
is very pleasant as they haye very
little rain and every day is bright•
and warm. The only water they
have is from underground springs_
and this is used for irrigation, but
they import water for drinking.
Potatoes, tomatoes and bananas ,
are the main' crop. Mrs. Kennedy
also showed pictures ° of Spain,
where they spent one' week but
found quite different; especially
the climate, also • pictures of
Germany and the British Isles.,
Elizabeth Robinson thanked
Mrs..Kennedy for coming to show
her pictures and comments, which
we all enjoyed very much. Mrs.
Ted Rice favoured with two
pleasant piano instrumentals.
The motto "a woman who wants
to do something finds a way,
another finds an excuse" was well
given by Mrs. Philip Stewart and
prepared by Mrs. Ross Shiells. No
man is born into this world whose
work is not born with him. We
should all have the feeling "this is
my work, nay blessing, not my
doom", We are inclined to put
things off for another day and often
find we have left it too late. Don't
be the one to give the clock the
laugh on you. We can always find
some excuse to not do job to day
and too often the motto turns out to
be true. "The woman who wants to
find a way, another finds an
excuse".
Mrs. Ray Leddy gave a reading .
"Thanksgiving as seen through the
eyes of a , small boy". Mrs. Bob' '
Helm gave recent, current events in
the news.. Elizabeth Robinson
thanked all who had taken part in
the program and the president
closed the meeting with the Queen.
