Bruce County
Elementary
Teachers
Given 26%
increase in Salary
A one-year contract giving 307
elementary school teachers salary
increases averaging 26.3 per cent
was ratified last week by the Bruce
County Board of Education.
The contract, retroactive to
September 1, was ratified by
teachers 'September 18.
It will cost the board $4,433,000
in the 1975-76 school year compar-
ed with $3.5 million last year.
Teachers without degrees will
earn from $8,000 to $15,800
annually while those with degrees
will earn from $10,800 to $22,600.
About one-third of the board's
elementary school teachers have
degrees.
The agreement expires August
31, 1976.
Trustee Harvey McCurdy of
Dobbinton, chairman of the board's
negotiating committee, said the
contract was competitive with other
boards in the area.
Other features are that teachers
reach their maximum salary in each
category after 11 years rather than
after '14 years in' senior categories
as in the previous agreement.
In an interview, Ronald Swan-
son, board treasurer, said that the

settlement 'was lower than many
boards. Some have been as high as
32 per cent, he said.
'Mr.. Swanson suggested •that
settlements earlier ' this year in
Windsor and Ottawa set the trend
for other boards in the 'province. •
A provincial government appoin-
ted fact-finder is looking into the
negotiations between the board
and its 200 secondary teachers.
Jack Bowers, education director,
said the board has hired an
additional 17 elementhry teachers
since last year' so the exact
comparison between the two years
is difficult.
Negotiations with the elementary
teachers began last May. •
