GUARANTEED FOR ONE FULL YEAR
By G. Austin
Two young people who took part
in the National. Farmers Union
Youth Exchange during the sum-.
mer were Grant McFarlane and
Sheil Steinsooll from Saskatche-
wan. They stayed at' the homes of
John Austin and Lorne Mcronald
in Local 335.
One of the . things which com-
pletely surprised the young people
and which irked them tremendous-
ly was that their Western screen-
ings were being sold in Ontario for
feed,
Western grain is shipped to.
Thunder Bay with the farmer
paying- the shipping charges,
where it is cleaned. The •amo'unt
cleaned out is docked from the
farmer's payment for his grain.
Western farmers have always
thought of screenings as waste
products with, no monetary value.
Screenings are sold in Ontario for
$118. to $135. per ton, more than,.
the Western farmers were getting
for their good barley.
Hopefully, • the youth exchange
each year will bring about better '
communications and more know-
ledge between farmers of West and
East. Some injustices to farmers
may then be corrected.
