This''Wee...k In Ripley
BY AB WYLDS
Although the weather this past
week end suited the beginning of
the fall season, it was .a busy week
end in this area. There was the
annual fall fair' at Kincardine with
many in the area attending. On
Saturday afternoon the wedding of
Larry Irwin, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Leonard Irwin, and Marianne
MacDonald, daughter of r- an
Mrs. John Macponald, was held in
St. Andrew's United Church.
Following it was the dinner, and
motor parade through the streets of
Ripley. Then the dance was held in
the evening in the auditorium of
the Ripley District High School.
On Saturday afternoon there was
an auction sale at the Johnston
home farm two blocks east of
Ripley. Auctioneers Grant McDon-
ald and Wallace Ballagh' sold the
household effects belonging to
Mrs. Elliott Johnston. All these
events, coupled with visitors home
for the last long week end of the
current summer, added a hustle to
the streets of Ripley.

On Monday evening of last week,
August 25, a well attended sale was
held for Mrs. Gladys Cameron who '
recently sold her home in Ripley.
Auctioneers Grant McDonald and
Wallace Ballagh sold furniture and
household effects for Mrs. Camer-
on. The threat of rain during the
afternoon made it necessary to load
the things for sale onto wagons and
pick up trucks. These were moved
to the new Huron Township
Municipal building where the sale
was held. , The large crowd
attending the sale from 7 to past 11
in the evening, filled all parking
spaces in the northeast corner of
Ripley - reminding many of same
crowded parking earlier in August
when Ab Tout's Old Time Fiddler's
Jamboree at the Reunion was also
held in the same shed.

Weber- had undergone surgery in
Victoria Hospital in-`London.

Former Village foreman Am-
brose Gamble has been home -from
Kincardine Hospital for the past
two weeks. It is nice to see these
people back and able to be out
again.

Last Friday evening a large
"tractor trailer" transport truck
carrying empty btilk shipping
containers arrived at Jack Treleav-
en's Ripley grain elevator. They
were marked "Manchester Liners"
and were filled with wheat here.
As far as the writer is aware this is
the first time such bulk containers
were in Ripley. These containers,
with their load of wheat, 'would be
loaded directly into their ocean
going ship.
Gordon Finlayson of Lochalsh,
shipping livestock from Lucknow,
sent an animal to' the Ontario
Livestock Yards in Toronto which
brought one of the top prices and
received mention on the weekly
radio report from Wingham last
Saturday.

The writer was contacted laSt

MacDonald of Ripley in' regard to
correcting a few inadvertent errors
in the history of Lochalsh as it
appears in the Ripley-Huron Re-_
union history book. Firstly, every
place . where it. states Gordon
MacRae, it should be Duncan
MacRae - well known teacher and
native of the Lochalsh area, now,
living in Southampto0+4rs. Mary
MacDonald and 14,01.- Adeline
Hackett have corre*Oliumber of
books since the •InWake , was
discovered. However, they 'Would
appreciate anyone, purchasing a
book 'prior to this discovery,
correcting. this error. Also in
another place in this same section
on the history' of Lochalsh, Dan
MacDonald should be the son of
Finlay MacDonald and everyone
knows here that it is Zorra
Township and not*Zerro. Also no
mention was made of. Murdock and
ChriStie MacDonald as the keepers
of the Point Clark lighthouse for a
quarter of a century.. In fact, Mr.
MacDonald was known as "Mur-
dock Lighthouse". NO matter how
hard we try 'unintentional mistakes
and omissions occur. •
Early last Wednesday morning
the sound of the train whistle ,was
heard in Ripley. When the train
passed through here, it consisted of
a locomotive, •a caboose, and a
passenger car on its way. to the
coast at Kincardine. This is the
first passenger coach on this
branch in many a year and
everyone was wondering about its
purpose.,
Last Sunday morning about
eleven thirty, the fire siren
soundeclin Ripley and soon the two
trucks were rounding the bank
corner heading, west on the eighth.
The fire was at the farm of Allan
Farrell in the Bethel area. Despite
all efforts, two area barnS were
destroyed. Strong winds on
Sunday were the cause of the
spread. Just before eleven thirty
Sunday , evening the siren• sounded
again and the trucks once More
headed west. This time it was
reported that fire was at a. club
house at the Bruce Beach Golf
Club.
Sparks from the burning, barn at
Allan Farrell's farm were blown by
the high winds 'to Ed Creech's barn
and it 'too was destroyed. In both
cases the loss amounted to
thousand§ of dollars as the
season's crops were lost.
