TODAY'S HEALTH
Constructive use of leisure'
can improve your health
by. David Woods
Whether you pronounce it to
rhyme with pleasure or seizure,
leisure is extremely impOrtant to
your health and well-being.
Like its pronunciation, leisum
itself is a matter of individual
choice. But there's more to it than,
just slumping in front .of the tele-
vision set with a bottle of beer. ,
Ideally, leisure should be a
change of pace. It should be an
Opportunity to recharge the bat
teries; a change to break Up the
routine. And leisure should be both
relaxing and stimulating. But it
doesn't have to be extreme; taking
a break need be neither a 10 coun-
tries in 10 days whirlwind tour of
Europe, nor a lotion-daubed, lotus
eating lie-in on a' beach without
moving a. limb.
The secret is to make construc7
tive use/of leisure time on a regular
basis.
After all, most of us need to let
off steam . . . to get rid of the pres-
sUres of modern living. Trying to
do that by using liquor or tran-
quillizers is a short-term — and note
very healthy— solution. s
A far more effective approach is
to. get wrapped up` in sdme activity
that's both relaxing and enjoyable
— preferably something that con-
trasts with your work life. For
example, the highly competitive
executive might be better off paint-
ing or sailing than engaging in, a
sport — golf, ' say, or tennis —
where he becomes furious and up-
tight if he doesn't win. Similarly,
a clerical worker might derive
greater satisfaction and benefit
' froM leisure activities requiring
leadership skills.
In 'any event, the point is, that
many people become so involved,.
in their work that they never get r
around to its rewards . . to enjoy-
ing the leisure they've earned.
This may be due, in some meas-
ure, to a sort of lingering puritanism

especially for such people —'leisure
is vital therapy.
A change of scene, new learning
experiences, regular vacations;
sports and hobbies and readingi or
all of these can refresh, and ifivig-
orate. They can help us back into
the normal daily routine with a new
outlook, a new spirit.
The dietiOnary defines leisure as
having one's time free from the
demands of work or duty. You owe
it to yourself to make a healthy
investment in that freedom.

We can't knock the Davis
Government
We can't praise it either. The law won't let us.
Through legiSlatiOn, the Davis government has made sure that its

We are Crown employees and civil servants. We live with severe
restrictions OR our civil ridhts.
Our political rights are almost non-existent.
We can't canvass for the candidate of our choice.
We can't even speak or write publicly on any issue that may be
part of a political party's platform.
For instance, we can't talk abait 'taxes, housing or
education policies. .
We can't take part in radio hot line shows, or put up a stn to .
support our favourite candidate.
All-we-ask-is our basic civil liberties:The right to take part in the
democratic process.
./t costs taxpayers nothing.
We hope you will vote for civil rights ... for every one.
We don't want our rights knocked about.
