Nicotine In
Nonsmokers
Most urban nonsmokers have
nicotine in their body fluids for
'post of their lives. They, get it from
breathing indoor air polluted by
other people's tobacco smoke.
Measurable quantities of nico-
tine were present in the blood and
urine of most nonsmokers tested at
two hospitals in London, England.
While the average' concentration of
nicotine in the urine of nonsmokers
was 10 units, it was 1200 units for
smokers. However, when non-
smokers were deliberately exposed
to high concentrations of tobacco
smoke in an unventilated room for
a' little more' than an hour the
average level of nicotine in their
urine increased 1000 percent.
One startling result of the study
was this: after exposure, several
nonsmokers had such enormous
increases in their urinary nicotine
levels that 'they were:higher than
those of smokers.
Passive smoking may be harm-
ful, and infants are most at risk.
Tobacco smoke generated by
parents' smoking actually doubles
the risk of an infant's attack of
pneumonia or bronchitis.
The fact that , some nicotine is
