Reunion Picnic
At Ashfield Park on Sunday,
August .10th, one hundred and
thirty descendants of. William E.
Andrew and ofhis sister Mary Ann
Andrew, who married William
Lane, celebrated the arrival of
these two families to Canada from
Devon, England in 1850. This day
was also, the 50th anniversary of
'their family picnic.
There were many happy faces as
'greetings and' reminiscing of form-
er times continued all through the
day, from the bounteous smorgas-
bord at noon until a similar meal at
five. •
The delight of the day was
meeting friendg from as far away as
EchtiOnton, Pembroke, Toronto,
Hamilton, London and a special
pleasure was the visit from
Michigan of the family of Sarah
Jane (Andrew) Briggs.•
Bill Andrew of Edmonton show-
ed very interesting slides .he had
taken while in England last year 'of
the ancestral homes and areas of
interest to the Andrew-Lane famil-
ies. The new home was 100 years
old and another 400 years and were
just as beautiful and well kept as
ever. They were built for the
future. After seeing these beauti,
ful pictures of the stately and lovely
homes and countryside of Devon,
we can understand why these
people and others from the
"Mother Countries" wanted to
build similar homeshomesiii Cariada, and
this is One reason we see replicas of
these homes built by the pioneers.
We are very thankful they brought
their talents, ambitions and dreams
with them. Bill is steeped in family
history and as he related their
stories we seemed closer and more
appreciative of our ancestors.
Sports for the children were
enjoyed in the afternoon: Several
letters of good wishes, from friends
who were unable to attend, were
read. Jack. Webster of Edmonton
brought greetings from Alberta.
There were four couples from
Michigan, who were delighted' to
find so many relatives, and we.
hope they come. again. Julie
Carruthers of Goderich sang a:solo.
Charlie McQuillin played fife
seleotions which kept toes,tapping.
