The regular monthly meeting of-
the Ripley and District Horticultur-
al - Society was held on Tuesday of
last week. Mrs.. Connie van der
Hoek of the 6th concession cast in
Huron Township was the hostess. :
Over thirty members attended this
July meeting with each lady
wearing her own homemade nose-
gay,.
Mrs. Oliver McCharles took the
topic speaking on "Exhibiting , and
Judging Horticultural Exhibits 'at
Shows and Fairs". Mrs. McChar-
les reviewed ,the upcoming prize
list, the horticultural judging
standard and pointers from the
-Ontario School for Judges held in
Hamilton -recently and which 'she
attended. A quotation from a
lecture by one of the judging
instructors at the Hamilton School
was that "a judge can no more be a
judge 'by attending a couple of
lecturers than a person can become
a chicken by sitting in the hen
house. It takes a lot of hard
learning through experience as an
exhibitor, and a director. And as
well it takes learning from • every
available source over ,a period of
many years."
Marion commented on prize lists
explaining that they were the rules
set up for the show by each society.
Once made, these rules should not
be altered on the day of the show.
The definition of several terms and
names were given. A question Lnd
answer period followed the topic.
