Briuce Still Bruceiksis Free In
Category—hut Not In True Fact
THE LUCICN.OW SENTINEL, LUCKNOW, ONTARIO WEDNESDAY, JULY 23, '
Bruce County has not lost the
brucellosis-free status it achieved
July 1,'1971, At that time it was
the recognition that normally holds
for five years before' requiring
renewal.
Bruce retained the status be-
cause of the speed with which the
few outbreaks since have been
handled.
; But brucellosis-free does not
mean free from brucellosis.
Brucellosis-free is a recognition of
successful screening tests and herd
tests.
Dr.. R. B. Turnbull of the federal
agriculture •department says the'
disease situation in the county,,,
looks much better than it did earlier
in the year.. Only six herds are
under quarantine now and he
anticipates this will be reduced to
three within two weeks. '
These three' will not be infected
he said as they have had one clean
test. The first test is given 30 days
after infectiOn and the second 90
days later.
Most cases will show up from
screening or herd tests but this is
supplemented by market tests
made when the animalS are
slaughtered.. '

Milk • destined for the fluid
market or for cheese is tested at
Guelph Or Hull but the Walkerton
office does all sampling for cream
producers in Bruce,, Greyandparts
of Sitticoe, Perth,. Wellington and
Huron. These are checked four
times a year and 'there are m,
than' 2,000 samples, taken each
round.
Dr. Turnbull endorses the rec-
ommendations just made by the
Ontario Milk Marketing Board on
brucellosis control.
The board suggests that dairy-
men not take delivery of any animal
that has' not tested negative within
30 days. The operator should .,
report immediately to his veterin-
arian or the health of animals
branch each and every abortion
which occurs in his herd, and cut
down on traffic between different
herds to prevent introduction ofthe
disease.
"And remember brucellosis is no
more a dairy problem than one in a
beef herd. What is good practice
for one is good for the other: It' is
just that inter-farm dealing of beef
cows is not as prevalent as it is with
dairy animals."
