Bullets and Bears
Do Not Mix
By John Todd
On Wednesday evening, July 16,
a bear rummaging through a
garbage can in Port Elgin was shot
by an over zealous resident. The
rifle was a .22 and left a wounded
bear running loose within a
residential neighbourhood. The
animal was subsequently treed and
had to be destroyed.
• The Owen Sound office of 'the
Ministry 'of Natural Resources ,
reminds . residents of Grey and
Bruce Counties that bears are not
dangerous. That situation, how-
ever, can suddenly change when
untrained, irresponsible persons
attack or shoot a bear without re-
gard to the consequences. This is
the worst possible method of hand-
ling a nuisance bear.
Anyone encountering a bear in
built-up or residential areas is
urged to call the:' Ministry of
Natural Resources. Trained staff
are available to handle persistent
bears. Under no circumstances
should an individual attempt to '
capture, molest or kill a bear.,

This is the year that proves
Columbus was wrong in 1492 —
the world really is flat.
Idiosyncrasies
By The Country Mouse
People are 'funny.
They don't want to eat groundhog,
not even called woodchuck.
A' clean little eater
of green vegetation -
he doesn't wallow in mud,
or enjoy ripe meat
to eat.
People are' funny.
They like to eat bunny -
rabbits and hares,
such cunning small pets
with upstanding ears •
and twitching small 'noses
and fur soft as down.
But .people so funny
will eat little bunny.
People are funny.
They like to eat
bear meat,
venison or moose,
(even beaver, I hear)
wild duck or goose,
partridge or grouse,
so many wild things
that live far away.
But groundhogs
in pastures
or grainfields?
Oh, no!
This was my , reaction • to Cy
'Strante when he stopped in the
middle of a recipe for cooking
groundhog because he didn't think
he would like it.

Tfiey'll settle for bunny

with curly white wool,
playful and happy,
or lying in meadows

Or wide-eyed young calves,
