Bullets and Bears Do Not Mix By John Todd On Wednesday evening, July 16, a bear rummaging through a garbage can in Port Elgin was shot by an over zealous resident. The rifle was a .22 and left a wounded bear running loose within a residential neighbourhood. The animal was subsequently treed and had to be destroyed. • The Owen Sound office of 'the Ministry 'of Natural Resources , reminds . residents of Grey and Bruce Counties that bears are not dangerous. That situation, how- ever, can suddenly change when untrained, irresponsible persons attack or shoot a bear without re- gard to the consequences. This is the worst possible method of hand- ling a nuisance bear. Anyone encountering a bear in built-up or residential areas is urged to call the:' Ministry of Natural Resources. Trained staff are available to handle persistent bears. Under no circumstances should an individual attempt to ' capture, molest or kill a bear., POINT OF VIEW This is the year that proves Columbus was wrong in 1492 — the world really is flat.
