ONTARIO BEEF CALF INCOME
STABILIZATION PROGRAM
The objective of this program is
to stabilize the income of beef
calf producers in Ontario: It is
anticipated that by so doing the
program will encourage a con-
tinuing steady supply of Ontario
produced stocker calves. The
program is long term in scope
and designed to benefit those pro-
ducers who plan to continue in
beef calf production.
The main features of the pro-
gram, subject to certain terms
and conditions are: (a) The pro-
gram is voluntary and open to all
beef calf producers in Ontario.
(b) Participating producers must
join the program for, a' five year
period and must sign a contract to
that effect.
(c) Each year participating pro-
&leers must supply pertinent
farm data including the number
and type of beef cows on the
farm as of July 1st, For the pur-.
poses of this program beef cows
are defined as cows which have
produced a calf. Any cows from
'which industrial or fluid milk is
sold cannot be registered in :the
program. It is the responsibility
of participating producers to ade-
quately describe beef cows en-
rolled in the program so that
they can be identified.
(d) Participating producers pay
an annual fee per beef cow en-
rolled in the program. For 1975
this fee is $5 per cow and for 1975
only a promissory note duly sign-
ed and payable on January 31st,
1976 is acceptable in, lieu of a
cheque. Cheques should be made
payable to the Treasurer of Ont-
ario.
(e) The Ontario government con-
tracts to make a grant per cow
to participating producers in those
years in which beef stocker calf
marketprices fail to return a
basic.income over and above op-
erating costs for efficient beef
calf producers.
To calculate the Grant per cow:
(a) A price guarantee per pound
is established for stocker calves
each year. The guaranteed level
is designed to cover operating
costs plus' a percentage of fixed
costs on an efficient operation.
For 1075 the price guarantee is 50c
per pound.
(b) The weighted average market
price of Ontario produced stocker

.cial sun-screening lotions are
" available:
• Avoid the' midday sun in the
early stages of tanning, kind also
reflecting surfaCes like water or
sand, which can make the sun's
rays more: fierce and burning.
• Use a suntan cream or lotion,
and, for Icing periods in the sun,
protect the head and neck with
'suitable covering.
• Guard your eyes. Light rays can
damage the retina, and sun-
glasses, besides cutting out glare,
will afford some protection.
• Remember that. while sun is a
good source of vitamin D —' the
same vitamin that's found' in egg
yolk and many kinds of fish —
too much sunshine can damage
the skin. causing it to age pre-
maturely.
• In hot weather you lose some of
the hody's throughper-,
• spiratiorOteplace them by drink-
ing fruit juice 'or other liquids.
• 'llyou do get 'sunburned, get out
of the sun and into a cool, 'dark
room. Apply a soothing cream to
the sunburned 'area. If you should
get heat stroke, call the dOctor*-
and in" the interim take steps to
bring the body temperature
down.
The secret of bringing some sun-
shine into your life is to do it grad-
ually — keep your cool, and
•en joy the sunny days ahead.

SOME WEEDS MAKE
GOOD FEED
Two Researchers in Minnesota
have found that some weeds, if
harvested or graded while im-
mature, are palatable and have a
high nutritional value to rumin-
ants. If some of these weeds are
present in a new stand of alfalfa,
it might be better to harvest them
than go to the , expense of using
a herbicide.
Three weeds -- Lambsquarters,
Ragweed and Pigweed — were
equal to Alfalfa (and better than
oats) in digestability . and crude
protein. Mustard was the only
weed tested which was less di-
gestable than, oats.
Four weeds were found to be as
palatable as oats — Lambsquar-
yard Grass. Mustard was always
less palatable whereas Ragweed
was variable. All weeds tested
had adequate minerals to meet
requirements of ruminants.
If you don't have many' weeds
in your new stand and they are
the ones with "good quality", pos-
sibility you don't need to spray.
On the other hand, if they are so
thick that they will crowd out the
alfalfa or trefoil, there is little
doubt that you should spray.,
