R: 3 Wingham, 2 1/2 miles east of Lightning Destroys Area Barn And Some Contents Whitechurch, about 5 a.m. morning. A quantity of hay and ments, was burned but the successful in removing all th from the building. Mrs. Versteeg is the form Verbeek, ,daughter of Mr. .a Tony Verbeek of 4th conces Culross. While the recommendations of LOndon planner Ed Cornies on the future of local government in Bruce County could be crucial to the future of this area, it doesn't arouse Much local interest • among residents of Lucknow and Kinloss. About ten turned out to a meeting at Lucknow Town Hall on WedneSday of last week and heard Mr. Comities explain recommenda- tions in this preliminary report which has been presented to Bruce County Council. Earlier meetings at Kincardine and Tiverton produc- ed about the same /attendance at each meeting. In this report Mr. Cornies suggested the amalgamation of the municipalities of. Kincardine, Tiv- erton, Ripley, Lucknow and the Townships o1 Kincardine, Huron , and Kinloss into One governing body. The County Of Bruce would be reorganized from 31 municipal- governments down into 6. Almost before the recommenda- tion haci. a chance to be diScussed, he made a second proposal recommending that Lucknow, Rip- ley, Kinloss and Huron form one governing body and• that Bruce reduce its councils from 31 to 13. Kincardine was left by itself as one unit of goVernment. Last week's public meeting was basically an informal discussion among those present which induct: ed the Reeves of ,Kinloss and tucknow, councillorS from Luck- now, the Sentinel representative and about three interested citizens. Its, purpose, if nothing else, gave Mr. Corniesf an area viewpoint Which could -possibly be considered in his final recommendations. None 'of those present expressed complete opposition to amalgama- tion if benefits, warranting the change, could be shown. One thing in his report was clear. Neither Lucknow nor Kinloss wanted to be amalgamated with the town of Kincardine if the opinions of the ten present could be considered as representative. Lucknow and Kinloss Township are in the unique position of having many shared services such as recreation, fire, medical and social .with the townships of Ashfield and West Wawanosh in Huron County. NO form of amalgamation' in Bruce County could produce an improve- ment on these programs which have, taken years to •negotiate. Amalgamation, as it would affect these services, would •be a back- ward step for this area. Reeve George Joynt of Lucknow pointed out the fact that any residential growth of Lucknow is presently very restricted in a north Lucknow Fire Department an- sered a call to the farm home of Ted Vander Velde a, few miles west of Lucknow • on Highway 86 last Saturday shortly after 9 a.m. A bolt of lightning had struck a pole and followed the clothesline into the back of the Vander Velde. house, setting fire to a potato bag. A line of hose was laid but was not needed as the fire was quickly extinguished without its use. The ,family were hoine at the time and fottunately no damage resulted except to the clothes line which was burned through in three places. COUNT BLESSINGS Don't be sorry you are -grow- ing old just thank your lucky stars you're here to do it. or north-west direction and that the most logical Lucknow residential' growth pattern was to the south into Huron County. He suggested two alternatives to solve the, problem: Either Lucknow be given permission to annex the needed land from Huron County or Lucknow petition the proper auth- orities, to be removed from Bruce and become part of 'Huron County. This is, not a new point of view by Reeve Joynt. He has expressed it previously. It is felt by many in this community that Lucknow, in many ways, is more commonly aligned with Huron County than with Bruce. ObServers at last week'S Meeting would leave very uncertain 'of whether Mr. Cornies' report offer- ed anything of concrete value to, this area. In many ways, in shared services, this community is already many steps ahead of, the Cornies' report 1 and implementation of his report would, in many ways, only "muddy the water". ' Lucknow and adjacent municip- alities have seen an "iron curtain" go Up right down highway 86 when it comes to dealings , between Huron and Bruce County. School Boards. The KingdoMs of "Ches- ley" and "Clinton", on good days, sometimes talk to one another, but rarely without difficulty. The lack of co-operation' on "border issues" has left many in this area disillusioned over county school boards. Let's not let it happen at the municipal council levels. Amalga- mation in Bruce, ruining present shared programs as they exist, might be just the thing to do it.
